Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, with a first meeting in January 1990, the program was launched on October 14, 1990 with a first order from United Airlines. The prototype was rolled out on April 9, 1994, and first flew on June 12, 1994. The 777 first entered commercial service with United Airlines on June 7, 1995. Longer range variants were launched on February 29, 2000 and were first delivered on April 29, 2004. It is the largest twinjet and has a typical 3-class capacity of 301 to 368 passengers, with a range of 5,240 to 8,555 nautical miles (9,700 to 15,840 km). It is recognizable for its large-diameter turbofan engines, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section, and a blade-shaped tail cone. It has fly-by-wire controls, a first for Boeing. It initially competed with Airbus A340 and McDonnell Douglas MD-11, both now out of production, and currently competes with the Airbus A330-300 and newer Airbus A350 XWB. The original 777 with a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 545,000–660,000 lb (247–299 t) was produced in two fuselage lengths: the initial -200 was followed by the extended-range 777-200ER in 1997; and the 33.25 ft (10.13 m) longer 777-300 in 1998. Those 777 Classics were powered with 77,200–98,000 lbf (343–436 kN) General Electric GE90, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines. The longer range 777-300ER with a MTOW of 766,000–775,000 lb (347–352 t) entered service in 2004, the ultra long-range 777-200LR in 2006, and the 777F freighter in 2009. These long haul variants feature 110,000–115,300 lbf (489–513 kN) GE90 engines and extended raked wingtips. In November 2013, Boeing announced the 777X development with the -8 and -9 variants, scheduled to enter service by 2020. The 777X features composite wings with folding wingtips and General Electric GE9X engines. The 777 has received more orders than any other wide-body airliner; as of August 2019, more than 60 customers had placed orders for 2,049 aircraft of all variants, with 1,609 delivered. In 1978, Boeing unveiled three new models: the twin-engine Boeing 757 to replace its 727, the twin-engine 767 to challenge the Airbus A300, and a trijet 777 concept to compete with the DC-10 and L-1011. The mid-size 757 and 767 launched to market success, due in part to 1980s' extended-range twin-engine operational performance standards (ETOPS) regulations governing transoceanic twinjet operations. These regulations allowed twin-engine airliners to make ocean crossings at up to three hours' distance from emergency diversionary airports. Under ETOPS rules, airlines began operating the 767 on long-distance overseas routes that did not require the capacity of larger airliners. The trijet 777 was later dropped, following marketing studies that favored the 757 and 767 variants. Boeing was left with a size and range gap in its product line between the 767-300ER and the 747-400. By the late 1980s, DC-10 and L-1011 models were approaching retirement age, prompting manufacturers to develop replacement designs. McDonnell Douglas was working on the MD-11, a stretched and upgraded successor of the DC-10, while Airbus was developing its A330 and A340 series. In 1986, Boeing unveiled proposals for an enlarged 767, tentatively named 767-X, to target the replacement market for first-generation wide-bodies such as the DC-10, and to complement existing 767 and 747 models in the company lineup. The initial proposal featured a longer fuselage and larger wings than the existing 767, along with winglets. Later plans expanded the fuselage cross-section but retained the existing 767 flight deck, nose, and other elements. Airline customers were uninterested in the 767-X proposals, and instead wanted an even wider fuselage cross-section, fully flexible interior configurations, short- to intercontinental-range capability, and an operating cost lower than that of any 767 stretch. Airline planners' requirements for larger aircraft had become increasingly specific, adding to the heightened competition among aircraft manufacturers. By 1988, Boeing realized that the only answer was a new clean-sheet design, which became the 777 twin-jet. The company opted for the twin-engine configuration given past design successes, projected engine developments, and reduced-cost benefits. The design phase for the new twinjet was different from Boeing's previous commercial jetliners. For the first time, eight major airlines – All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and United Airlines – had a role in the development. This was a departure from industry practice, where manufacturers typically designed aircraft with minimal customer input. The eight airlines that contributed to the design process became known within Boeing as the "Working Together" group. At the first group meeting in January 1990, a 23-page questionnaire was distributed to the airlines, asking what each wanted in the design. By March 1990, Boeing and the airlines had decided upon a basic design configuration: a cabin cross-section close to the 747's, capacity up to 325 passengers, flexible interiors, a glass cockpit, fly-by-wire controls, and 10 percent better seat-mile costs than the A330 and MD-11. Boeing selected its Everett factory in Washington, home of 747 production, as the 777's final assembly site. On October 14, 1990, United Airlines became the 777's launch customer when it placed an order for 34 Pratt & Whitney-powered aircraft valued at US$11 billion with options on an additional 34. The development phase coincided with United's replacement program for its aging DC-10s. United required that the new aircraft be capable of flying three different routes: Chicago to Hawaii, Chicago to Europe, and non-stop from Denver, a hot and high airport, to Hawaii. ETOPS certification was also a priority for United, given the overwater portion of United's Hawaii routes. In January 1993, a team of United developers joined other airline teams and Boeing designers at the Everett factory. The 240 design teams, with up to 40 members each, addressed almost 1,500 design issues with individual aircraft components. The fuselage diameter was increased to suit Cathay Pacific, the baseline model grew longer for All Nippon Airways, and British Airways' input led to added built-in testing and interior flexibility, along with higher operating weight options. The 777 was the first commercial aircraft designed entirely by computer. Each design drawing was created on a three-dimensional CAD software system known as CATIA, sourced from Dassault Systemes and IBM. This lets engineers assemble a virtual aircraft, in simulation, to check for interference and verify that the thousands of parts fit properly—thus reducing costly rework. Boeing developed its high-performance visualization system, FlyThru, later called IVT (Integrated Visualization Tool) to support large-scale collaborative engineering design reviews, production illustrations, and other uses of the CAD data outside of engineering. Boeing was initially not convinced of CATIA's abilities and built a physical mock-up of the nose section to verify its results. The test was so successful that additional mock-ups were canceled. The 777 "was completed with such precision that it was the first Boeing jet that didn’t need its kinks worked out on an expensive physical mock-up plane", which contrasted sharply with the development of Boeing's next new airliner, the 787. Into production and testing The production process included substantial international content, an unprecedented level of global subcontracting for a Boeing jetliner, later exceeded by the 787. International contributors included Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (fuselage panels), Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. (center wing section), Hawker de Havilland (elevators), and Aerospace Technologies of Australia (rudder). An agreement between Boeing and the Japan Aircraft Development Corporation, representing Japanese aerospace contractors, made the latter risk-sharing partners for 20 percent of the entire development program. The initial 777-200 model was launched with propulsion options from three manufacturers, General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, and Rolls-Royce, giving the airlines their choice of engines from competing firms. Each manufacturer agreed to develop an engine in the 77,000 lbf (340 kN) and higher thrust class (a measure of jet engine output) for the world's largest twinjet. New production methodologies were developed, including a turn machine that could rotate fuselage subassemblies 180 degrees, giving workers access to upper body sections. Major assembly of the first aircraft began on January 4, 1993. By the start of production, the program had amassed 118 firm orders, with options for 95 more from 10 airlines. Total investment in the program was estimated at over US$4 billion from Boeing, with an additional US$2 billion from suppliers. On April 9, 1994, the first 777, number WA001, was rolled out in a series of 15 ceremonies held during the day to accommodate the 100,000 invited guests. The first flight took place on June 12, 1994, under the command of chief test pilot John E. Cashman. This marked the start of an 11-month flight test program that was more extensive than testing for any previous Boeing model. Nine aircraft fitted with General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, and Rolls-Royce engines were flight tested at locations ranging from the desert airfield at Edwards Air Force Base in California to frigid conditions in Alaska, mainly Fairbanks International Airport. To satisfy ETOPS requirements, eight 180-minute single-engine test flights were performed. The first aircraft built was used by Boeing's nondestructive testing campaign from 1994 to 1996, and provided data for the -200ER and -300 programs. At the successful conclusion of flight testing, the 777 was awarded simultaneous airworthiness certification by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) on April 19, 1995. Entry into service On May 15, 1995, United Airlines received the first Boeing 777-200 and made the first commercial flight on June 7 Boeing delivered the first 777 to United Airlines on May 15, 1995. The FAA awarded 180-minute ETOPS clearance ("ETOPS-180") for the Pratt & Whitney PW4084-engined aircraft on May 30, 1995, making it the first airliner to carry an ETOPS-180 rating at its entry into service. The first commercial flight took place on June 7, 1995, from London Heathrow Airport to Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. Longer ETOPS clearance of 207 minutes was approved in October 1996. On November 12, 1995, Boeing delivered the first model with General Electric GE90-77B engines to British Airways, which entered service five days later. Initial service was affected by gearbox bearing wear issues, which caused British Airways to temporarily withdraw its 777 fleet from transatlantic service in 1997, returning to full service later that year. General Electric subsequently announced engine upgrades. The first Rolls-Royce Trent 877-powered aircraft was delivered to Thai Airways International on March 31, 1996, completing the introduction of the three powerplants initially developed for the airliner. Each engine-aircraft combination had secured ETOPS-180 certification from the point of entry into service. By June 1997, orders for the 777 numbered 323 from 25 airlines, including satisfied launch customers that had ordered additional aircraft. Operations performance data established the consistent capabilities of the twinjet over long-haul transoceanic routes, leading to additional sales. By 1998, the 777 fleet had approached 900,000 flight hours. Boeing states that the 777 fleet has a dispatch reliability (rate of departure from the gate with no more than 15 minutes delay due to technical issues) above 99 percent. Initial derivatives Cathay Pacific introduced the stretched -300 variant on May 27, 1998 After the original model, Boeing developed an increased gross weight variant of the 777-200 with greater range and payload capability. Initially named 777-200IGW, the 777-200ER first flew on October 7, 1996, received FAA and JAA certification on January 17, 1997, and entered service with British Airways on February 9, 1997. Offering greater long-haul performance, the variant became the most widely ordered version of the aircraft through the early 2000s. On April 2, 1997, a Malaysia Airlines -200ER named "Super Ranger" broke the great circle "distance without landing" record for an airliner by flying eastward from Boeing Field, Seattle to Kuala Lumpur, a distance of 10,823 nautical miles (20,044 km; 12,455 mi), in 21 hours and 23 minutes. Following the introduction of the -200ER, Boeing turned its attention to a stretched version of the airliner. On October 16, 1997, the 777-300 made its first flight. At 242.4 ft (73.9 m) in length, the -300 became the longest airliner yet produced (until the A340-600), and had a 20 percent greater overall capacity than the standard length model. The -300 was awarded type certification simultaneously from the FAA and JAA on May 4, 1998, and entered service with launch customer Cathay Pacific on May 27, 1998. The first generation of Boeing 777 models, the -200, -200ER, and -300 have since been known collectively as Boeing 777 Classics. Early plans centered on a 777-100X proposal, a shortened variant of the -200 with reduced weight and increased range, similar to the 747SP. However, the -100X would have carried fewer passengers than the -200 while having similar operating costs, leading to a higher cost per seat. By the late 1990s, design plans shifted to longer-range versions of existing models. In March 1997, the Boeing board approved the 777-200X/300X specifications: 298 passengers in three classes over 8,600 nmi (15,900 km) for the 200X and 6,600 nmi (12,200 km) with 355 passengers in a tri-class layout for the 300X, with design freeze planned in May 1998, 200X certification in August 2000, and introduction in September and in January 2001 for the 300X. The 1.37 m (4 ft 6 in) wider wing was to be strengthened and the fuel capacity enlarged, and it was to be powered by simple derivatives with similar fans. GE was proposing a 454 kN (102,000 lbf) GE90-102B, while P&W offered its 436 kN (98,000 lbf) PW4098 and R-R was proposing a 437 kN (98,000 lbf) Trent 8100. Rolls-Royce was also studying a Trent 8102 over 445 kN (100,000 lbf). Boeing was studying a semi-levered, articulated main gear to help the take-off rotation of the proposed -300X, with its higher 324,600 kg (715,600 lb) MTOW. By January 1999, its MTOW grew to 340,500 kg (750,000 lb), and thrust requirements increased to 110,000–114,000 lbf (490–510 kN). A more powerful engine in the thrust class of 100,000 lbf (440 kN) was required, leading to talks between Boeing and engine manufacturers. General Electric offered to develop the GE90-115B engine, while Rolls-Royce proposed developing the Trent 8104 engine. In 1999, Boeing announced an agreement with General Electric, beating out rival proposals. Under the deal with General Electric, Boeing agreed to only offer GE90 engines on new 777 versions. On February 29, 2000, Boeing launched its next-generation twinjet program, initially called 777-X, and began issuing offers to airlines. Development was slowed by an industry downturn during the early 2000s. The first model to emerge from the program, the 777-300ER, was launched with an order for ten aircraft from Air France, along with additional commitments. On February 24, 2003, the -300ER made its first flight, and the FAA and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency, successor to the JAA) certified the model on March 16, 2004. The first delivery to Air France took place on April 29, 2004. The -300ER, which combined the -300's added capacity with the -200ER's range, became the top-selling 777 variant in the late 2000s, benefitting as airlines replaced comparable four-engine models with twinjets for their lower operating costs. The second long-range model, the 777-200LR, rolled out on February 15, 2005, and completed its first flight on March 8, 2005. The -200LR was certified by both the FAA and EASA on February 2, 2006, and the first delivery to Pakistan International Airlines occurred on February 26, 2006. On November 10, 2005, the first -200LR set a record for the longest non-stop flight of a passenger airliner by flying 11,664 nautical miles (21,602 km) eastward from Hong Kong to London. Lasting 22 hours and 42 minutes, the flight surpassed the -200LR's standard design range and was logged in the Guinness World Records. The production freighter model, the 777F, rolled out on May 23, 2008. The maiden flight of the 777F, which used the structural design and engine specifications of the -200LR along with fuel tanks derived from the -300ER, occurred on July 14, 2008. FAA and EASA type certification for the freighter was received on February 6, 2009, and the first delivery to launch customer Air France took place on February 19, 2009. Production developments and 777X The improved and updated Boeing 777-9X was rolled out on March 13, 2019 See also: Boeing 777X Initially second to the 747 as Boeing's most profitable jetliner, the 777 became the company's most lucrative model in the 2000s. Program sales accounted for an estimated US$400 million of Boeing's pretax earnings in 2000, US$50 million more than the 747. By 2004, the airliner accounted for the bulk of wide-body revenues for the Boeing Commercial Airplanes division. In 2007, orders for second-generation 777 models approached 350 aircraft, and in November of that year, Boeing announced that all production slots were sold out to 2012. The program backlog of 356 orders was valued at US$95 billion at list prices in 2008. In 2010, Boeing announced plans to increase production from 5 aircraft per month to 7 aircraft per month by mid-2011, and 8.3 per month by early 2013. Complete assembly of each 777-300ER requires 49 days. The smaller Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the first stage of a replacement aircraft initiative called the Boeing Yellowstone Project, entered service in 2011. Reportedly, the 777 could eventually be replaced by a new aircraft family, Yellowstone 3, which would draw upon technologies from the 787. In November 2011, assembly began on the 1,000th 777, a -300ER model for Emirates, which was rolled out in March 2012. By the late 2000s, the 777 was facing increased potential competition from Airbus' planned A350 XWB and internally from proposed 787 variants, both airliners that offer fuel efficiency improvements. As a consequence, the 777-300ER received an engine and aerodynamics improvement package for reduced drag and weight. In 2010, the variant further received a 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) maximum zero-fuel weight increase, equivalent to a higher payload of 20–25 passengers; its GE90-115B1 engines received a 1–2.5 percent thrust enhancement for increased takeoff weights at higher-altitude airports. More changes were targeted for late 2012, including possible extension of the wingspan, along with other major changes, including a composite wing, new powerplant, and different fuselage lengths. Emirates was reportedly working closely with Boeing on the project, in conjunction with being a potential launch customer for new 777 versions. Among customers for the aircraft during this period, China Airlines ordered ten 777-300ER aircraft to replace 747-400s on long-haul transpacific routes (with the first of those aircraft entering service in 2015), noting that the 777-300ER's per seat cost is about 20% lower than the 747's costs (varying due to fuel prices). In November 2013, with orders and commitments totaling 259 aircraft from Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways, Boeing formally launched the 777X program, the third generation of the 777 (not to be confused with the 777-X variants, which were the second generation of the aircraft), with two models: the 777-8 and 777-9. The 777-9 was to be a further stretched variant with a capacity of over 400 passengers and a range of over 15,200 km (8,200 nmi), whereas the 777-8 was slated to seat approximately 350 passengers and have a range of over 17,200 km (9,300 nmi). Both models were to be equipped with new generation GE9X engines and feature new composite wings with folding wingtips. The first member of the 777X family, the 777-9, was set to enter service by 2020. By the mid-2010s, the 777 had become prevalent on the longest flights internationally and had become the most widely used airliner for transpacific routes, with variants of the type operating over half of all scheduled flights and with the majority of transpacific carriers. By April 2014, with cumulative sales surpassing those of the 747, the 777 became the best-selling wide-body airliner; at existing production rates, the aircraft was on track to become the most-delivered wide-body airliner by mid-2016. By February 2015, the backlog of undelivered 777s totaled 278 aircraft, representing just under three years of current production at 8.3 aircraft per month, causing Boeing to ponder the 2018-2020 time frame. In January 2016, Boeing confirmed plans to reduce the production rate of the 777 family from 8.3 per month to 7 per month in 2017 to help close the production gap between the 777 and 777X created by a lack of new orders. In 2018, assembling test 777-9 aircraft was expected to lower output to an effective rate of 5.5 per month. Boeing was expected to drop 777 production to five per month in August 2017. Updates and improvements Air France received the first 777-300ER on April 29, 2004 In tandem with the development of the third generation Boeing 777X, Boeing worked with General Electric to offer a 2% improvement in fuel efficiency to in-production 777-300ER aircraft. General Electric improved the fan module and the high-pressure compressor stage-1 blisk in the GE-90-115 turbofan, as well as reduced clearances between the tips of the turbine blades and the shroud during cruise. These improvements, of which the latter is the most important and was derived from work to develop the 787, were stated by GE to lower fuel burn by 0.5%. Boeing's wing modifications were intended to deliver the remainder. Boeing stated that every 1% improvement in the 777-300ER's fuel burn translates into being able to fly the aircraft another 75 nmi (139 km; 86 mi) on the same load of fuel, or add ten passengers or 2,400 lb (1,100 kg) of cargo to a "load limited" flight. In March 2015, additional details of the improvement package were unveiled. The 777-300ER was to shed 1,800 lb (820 kg) by replacing the fuselage crown with tie rods and composite integration panels, similar to those used on the 787. The new flight control software was to eliminate the need for the tail skid by keeping the tail off the runway surface regardless of the extent to which pilots command the elevators. Boeing was also redesigning the inboard flap fairings to reduce drag by reducing pressure on the underside of the wing. The outboard raked wingtip was to have a divergent trailing edge, described as a "poor man's airfoil" by Boeing; this was originally developed for the McDonnell Douglas MD-12 project. Another change involved elevator trim bias. These changes were to increase fuel efficiency and allow airlines to add 14 additional seats to the airplane, increasing per seat fuel efficiency by 5%. Mindful of the long time required to bring the 777X to the market, Boeing continued to develop improvement packages which improve fuel efficiency, as well as lower prices for the existing product. In January 2015, United Airlines ordered ten 777-300ERs, normally costing around US$150 million each but paid around US$130 million, a discount to bridge the production gap to the 777X. The roll-out of the prototype 777X, a 777-9 model, occurred on March 13, 2019. As of 2019, Boeing lists prices for the 777-200ER, -200LR, 777F, -300ER, 777-8, and 777-9 variants. Fly-by-wire In designing the 777 as its first fly-by-wire commercial aircraft, Boeing decided to retain conventional control yokes rather than change to sidestick controllers as used in many fly-by-wire fighter aircraft and in many Airbus airliners. Along with traditional yoke and rudder controls, the cockpit features a simplified layout that retains similarities to previous Boeing models. The fly-by-wire system also incorporates flight envelope protection, a system that guides pilot inputs within a computer-calculated framework of operating parameters, acting to prevent stalls, overspeeds, and excessively stressful maneuvers. Dear Readers, Today in Taylor Swift Pandemic Time Unsolved Mysteries Very Scientific Studies ™ we will investigate the song I Forgot That You Existed (IFTYE). Experts in Taylor Swift lyrics are divided between three main camps: This song is about Calvin Harris, This Song is About Kanye West, and This song is about BOTH Calvin Harris and Kanye West. I Forgot That You Existed is an interesting song in several ways. It has the aesthetic of the Lover album, bright and boppy, but with a hint of shade reminiscent of Reputation. Truly though, the song is way more about personal growth and healing than dissing someone else. There are deep challenges in analyzing this song. Predominantly, it deals with Taylor's inner monologue and feelings rather than verifiable life events and symbolism we could connect with other songs. There is also no known song where Calvin is the star character, so while we do know some things about her feelings on their relationship, it is nowhere close to what we have for other relationships like Joe, Jake, Harry, etc. Personally, I have gone back and forth on Kanye vs Calvin vs both for this song. I can’t decide. I’m not convinced it’s even possible to figure it out considering how vague the song is. And here's what we have to accept going in as scientists: not all highly scientific studies such as this one will yield a clear finding. We must be prepared for the answer to be "It cannot be determined." As Harper Lee said in To Kill a Mockingbird "Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what." We may not find an answer to this question, we might be licked before we begin, but nevertheless we will move forward with real courage and curiosity and see where the data takes us. Note: There is a not insignificant contingent of people here who believe this song is about Karlie Kloss. I did a deep dive into the Karlie/Taylor relationship to see if there would be merit in adding her to the study, but found that a lot of the lyrics did not fit at all for Karlie and decided not to move forward with this line of inquiry as it seemed fruitless. I will include this mini-study below. Note 2: Taylor was upset during the summer of 2016 that Scooter Braun was orchestrating bullying of her online. I entertained the idea that this song could be about Scooter Braun, but discarded it being specifically or solely about him because they lyrics make it clear that Taylor was once friends with this person and cared about them. This does not apply to Scooter, although he could be included in the Kanye narrative, a collective “you”.

In between 2009 and 2015 she badly wants and tries to secure his approval and friendship. The backlash from the 2016 incident was long lived and she says in 2019 it still hasn’t fully died out.

Would she have forgotten that Calvin was a bad boyfriend who wasn’t really all that into her? That he dropped her name from their song? That he said a couple mean things on twitter before apologizing? None of these things resonates very strongly, considering she had long moved on with Joe and the magical forgetting moment happened in 2018, 2+ years after the Calvin feud.
The Kanye incident and the ensuing backlash /bullying turned her life upside down and rocked her emotionally. Forgetting about all of that would have been magical. This song is about Kanye West and the 2016 Incident where he and Kim Kardashian called her a liar launching the media/hater backlash that upended her entire life, and it's not even close. The “You” in this song is specifically Kanye West but probably also extends to the media circus, bullies, twitter posters etc surrounding the incident. (I will refer to this as Kanye+ in the discussion) The evidence that this song is wholly or in part about Calvin Harris is so weak the theory can not be substantiated.
There is no question in my mind that this song is about Kanye+, and I am shocked by how definitive this is considering where I started, thinking it would be too close to call, that the song was too vague to yield enough evidence either way. It turns out that it is vague on specific details, but not vague at all when it comes to the emotional journey Taylor took to get to the moment described in the song and the matching emotional fingerprint of Kanye+. And it makes sense when you look at the big picture of Taylors life for the past 10 years. Taylor moved on from Calvin quickly and was in what would be a happy and healthy relationship in only several months. She ultimately embarrassed Calvin by letting people know SHE was the one who wrote his hit song. Calvin plays the role of, what we call in science, a chump in Reputation - he gets left in Getaway Car, he gets owned in I Did Something Bad, he was toyed with in Don’t Blame Me, and his girlfriend was insanely attracted to another man she met while they were dating in Gorgeous. He may have been a bad boyfriend who wasn’t very into Taylor and tweeted rude stuff, but he already lost. She never mentions him again. She may have learned from this relationship that she needed her love life to be more private, but he did not have a lasting impact on her such that 2 years later she felt some relief from FINALLy forgetting about him. He was long forgotten. Kanye+ is different. Kanye caused Chaos in her life starting in 2009 when she was 19 years old. The 2009 VMA incident negatively affected her mental health and she put a lot of effort into trying to win his approval and friendship. In 2015 he pretended to be her friend but exploited her for press attention again at the VMAs. The incident in 2016 was an apocalypse, causing her to go into hiding for a year. Her mental health suffered during this time and she said the situation felt hopeless and something she couldn’t bounce back from. She ruminated constantly on the situation, wrote bitter poems and essays she never published. Reputation contains a seething hate song about Kanye+ in Look What You Made Me Do. The Reputation tour set featured a tilted stage and many snakes, including a giant blow up one that looms large on the stage, suggesting that Kanye’s actions loomed large in her life. Taylor opens up and talks at length about the Kanye+ incident in Miss Americana and a Rolling Stone interview, both in 2019, about how deeply it affected her and changed her life as something that was horrible in the moment but also had been building for years. The Author of the Rolling Stone interview asks her at the end of the Kanye segment “When did I forgot that you existed happen?” and she said it was during the Reputation tour, 2+ years after the incident. The downfall of Taylor's reputation and the album Reputation were largely instigated by Kanye’s actions. As the first song on Lover, I Forgot that You Existed wipes the slate clean. Reputation is over and Kanye+'s influence in her life is over. At the time this song was written Taylor had not yet been vindicated and we know the backlash hadn't fully subsided (from Rolling Stone), so the peace and quiet she found came entirely from within through her own growth and healing and not from external validation. That is certainly something to feel about and celebrate. Taylor has found a new version of herself, shed the last remnants of the old, and moves on as a Lover.

Delta has unveiled the first-class seat that will feature on domestic flights on board its new Airbus A321neo jets. The US airline, which is due to take delivery of its first A321neo later this year, says the seats will have 'more privacy, more comfort, larger screens and superior stowage'. They will be fitted with 'enhanced memory-foam cushions' and have 'three times more volume for storing personal items and devices'. In addition, they will also have a 'larger and sturdier tray table' that Delta says will have 25 per cent more workspace than the first-class seats on its current A321 aircraft. Other features include a fixed headrest that 'allows for increased privacy and better sleep without compromising on seat width or space'. There will also be dedicated laptop and water bottle stowage for all phases of flight and customer-facing power ports. The Atlanta-based carrier partnered with German firm Recaro and London-based Factorydesign to develop the seat using customer feedback and industry trends. Delta says: 'Designed to be experience-rich for customers, Delta's new seat design will bring elements of the international travel experience that customers have enjoyed on wide-body aircraft to domestic routes for customers to enjoy at home.' Mauricio Parise, managing director of product development at Delta, said: 'As an industry leader in innovation, we are always looking for new ways to improve the overall customer experience. 'Customer insights were instrumental to the new design, and we spent hundreds of hours listening to customers so that we could respond with thoughtful improvements. 'We’ve completely customised every feature on the seat to create a truly unique, premium seating product for domestic first class.' In addition to its latest seat design, Delta’s new A321neo will also feature a 'next-generation, wireless in-flight entertainment system' created by the airline’s in-house start-up, Delta Flight Products. Delta has not yet revealed how big these screens will be. Delta has a firm order with Airbus for 100 A321neo aircraft with an option of taking 100 more. Continuing Did I mention all Aeroflot pilots are military? Well, they are and they must think they’re still in a MiG-31 fighter. Never before have I actually pulled lateral G’s lifting off from an airport. The pilot anchored that left wingtip over some stationary geographic marker and pushed that plane for all it could deliver. Once we rotated some 300 degrees, we snap rolled laterally horizontal, the nose pointed due up, and aimed for Angel’s Eleven. After a few minutes, we suddenly snapped back to true 3-dimensional horizontal. We were at cruising altitude and speed. You may mill around the aircraft and let your kids go nuts now. The stewardess comes by with a cart and asks if I would like anything. “A glass, some ice, and thorazine, if you have any,” I replied. She had the first two, I was out of luck with the tranquilizer. “Ah, well” I chewed it over, “Good thing I’ve brought my own.” It’s a 4.5 or 5-hour flight to Krasnoyarsk. I’ll have to ration my supplies carefully. I only brought the 1.75 liter bottle. I relight my cigar and surprisingly, no one pulled a C. Everett Koop on me. In fact, most everyone on the flight was smoking. I was nothing unusual to this batch of travelers. Without my usual citrus compliment, I managed to procure a few bottles of Novosibirsk Anchor beer. Very nice. It complemented the wood varnish-like harshness of the domestic vodka I had purchased. “Real” Stolichnaya was for export only, I found out later. Over the flight, I made several new friends. Once they got past my Stetson and Hawaiian shirt, they figured me as just another loopy foreigner. Although, I was a loopy foreigner that spoke fair Russian, and was liberal in his disbursement of vodka and cigars. They even all laughed at my “We’re having an airborne Communist Party” joke. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the KGB was waiting for me at the arrivals gate. They weren’t but some of my comrades from the Houston trip were. I received special attention through deplaning and off to baggage claim. No passport control or customs here. What the hell could they do? Send you to Siberia? Out to a lavish arrival dinner, we were whisked. I would have preferred a little downtime and a shower, but, whatever. It was a long ordeal as I met with many important people here in Siberia. I had to take notes to keep all the names straight. There was a huge arrival dinner, many, many toasts and lots of jokes over hopes for future projects in the near future. One people, one mind. I was taken to the hotel, which was a still-functioning “party” hotel. It was designed for functionaries in the Communist Party. Lately though, it had been press-ganged into service for visiting foreigners. It was weirdly opulent, in that bizarre way only Russia could offer. Since it was winter, and we were farther north, it was pitch black all day. But we wouldn’t let a little thing like that stand in our way. We had to travel some 350 kilometers north to the town of Yeniseysk, where the oil company had its home office. We had the option of driving or flying. I said I’d prefer to fly. It’d be quicker. The next morning, I’m out on the tarmac, standing next to a huge Russian helicopter. It was one of the 15 or so the Siberian oil company had received from the government fresh from the just abandoned fighting fields of Afghanistan. The helicopter was a Mil Mi-26, or what was referred to as The Hind. Twin-engines, 8-bladed rotor, this thing could literally carry a tank. Today, it was just passengers, luggage, and necessary Arctic survival gear. We flew due north towards the town of Yeniseysk. Along the way, we received word the hotel there was already occupied by some other faction, so we were diverted slightly north to the quaint little burg of Lesosibirsk. We arrived, literally landing in the courtyard of the Lesosibirsk hotel. It all worked out as tomorrow, this same helicopter would be ferrying us further north to inspect the drilling rig. Get some rest, we’re wheels-up at 0600. The hotel in town was absolutely ancient, but well insulated and comfortable. I needed a shower and some shut-eye as jet lag was playing silly buggers with my circadian rhythms. I begged off another dinner here and instead opted for an evening in, sans carousing. I didn’t think there was much carousable in this quaint, little, and distant frozen burg. The bathtub in the en suite bathroom was a huge, old four-footed cast-iron monstrosity; big enough to take laps in. I filled that sucker with the thermonuclear water from the town’s central steam plant and just soaked there for hours. I oozed my way to the too-short bed and slept the sleep of the jet-lagged righteous. The next morning, after being outfitted in the best Russian Arctic survival gear, we were shuffled onto the helicopter from last night and spot on 0600 hours, were wheels up heading even farther north. 400 kilometers later, we’re at the rig. The lone caretaker had shoveled off the helicopter landing pad so the blizzard we kicked up was only moderate. We are seriously north. Just below, but not by much, the Arctic Circle. The caretaker accompanied us with a huge Russian exposed-hammer shotgun. There were all kinds of winter nasties out here and he was here to ensure that we all came back from our trek out to the rig. We spent around 4 hours on the not-terribly-well lighted rig, taking pictures and getting pertinent questions answered. This was the rig that, if all went according to plan, would be drilling our first Joint Venture well. Back in the caretaker’s shack, he made certain to offer each of us some “Birch Cancer Tea”, which was supposed to be the end all of all cure-alls. It’ll fix anything that’s wrong, and prevent anything from going wrong. Odd flavor, but one could easily get used to it. We had to get back as the helicopter was slated for other duties the next day. I left the caretaker with a few cigars. He insisted I take a kilo of birch cancer dry tea with me so I could brew some up for all back home. We flew back to Lesosibirsk and once again, landed in the hotel courtyard. They made certain that I knew that I could keep all the Russian survival gear. It was either out of concern that I was not terribly bright and didn’t know cold could kill you or it was to cover up my horrible Hawaiian shirt. We spent the next four days at the Eniseigeofizika office, going over particulars of the well, the rig, and the Joint Venture. I met with the Chief of the company, Dr. Naftavaje Radovišča, who was extremely helpful in deciphering and adding to the mass of data I’ve collected. Another dossier went into my field book. I had maxed out on data and realized I needed to get to a phone and call home. This would have to wait until I returned to Moscow. International connections out here in the bush were very limited and very rare. Then disaster. They ran out of fuel at the Yeniseysk airport. It would take at least two or three more days to get fuel enough to fly back to Moscow. I told them that this was not really convenient. What were our alternatives? Could we try another, larger airport? It was decided to commandeer a bus and drive the 350 kilometers to Krasnoyarsk. They were a regional hub and if anyone had fuel, it would be them. The next day and a half was spent in a barely controlled skid from Lesosibirsk south to Krasnoyarsk. The bus carried two drivers, six Siberians, Gizmo the translator, one confused American, and cases of beer, vodka, and cognac. I think there was some food in there as well, never did find out. All our luggage followed us in a trailer that looked to be a recently converted horse trailer. It smelled like one as well. The ‘road’ could barely qualify as an intershire turnpath. We had to stop several times to clear snowdrifts from the roadway to allow us passage. We did stop every hour or so to stretch our legs and liberally irrigate the scenery. My comrades complained about the howling wind and -450 C temperatures. I wanted to hang around outside as the bus was heated to bread-baking temperatures. Back on the road again, I decided I wanted something a little different. I broke out my last bottle of Wild Turkey 101 Rye Whiskey. The bus grew silent. None of these characters have ever before sampled something so unusual. Besides, our vodka and beer supply was dwindling. Say what you want about Russians and their capacities, but the Wild Turkey poleaxed every single one of them. They were all snoring before the bottle completed a second pass around. I snorted something derisive and went up to chat with the driver and see if I could arrange for a pit stop. It was so hot in there, I was sweating. I probably should have bundled up some more, but I just stood outside in the Siberian outback, reveling in the cold, ice, and snow. It was refreshing. Since the rest of the crew was out for the count, the driver made an unscheduled stop in some nameless Siberian village. He resupplied our beer and vodka, found some fresh bread, smoked fish, and oddly enough, kilos of local chocolate. Another hour later and the bus began to stir once again. I asked if they wanted another snort of my dangerous brown liquor and everyone refused. Lightweights. We finally careen into Krasnoyarsk, and we’re back at the Party Hotel. I just had my bags taken to my room. I sat outside in a down vest, Hawaiian shirt, cargo shorts, and field boots smoking a cigar and appreciating the -400 C weather. I had to relieve myself of all that heat from the bus trip. The next day, Vadim, the Manager of the Siberian company with whom we were to construct the JV with told me some disturbing news. We couldn’t fly directly to Moscow due to weather. We could, however, divert to Elista, the capital of Kalmykia, in the Caucuses. From there, we could secure a flight directly to Moscow he assured me. Rather than sit in Siberia waiting on a load of fuel to arrive, I decided that I’d make the trip to Kalmykia. Hell, it was better than sitting on my elbows here doing nothing but waiting. I dispensed all the cigarettes, hams, and remaining calculators to my new comrades before Vadim and I departed. They were ready for me this time, as I took receipt of six different Russian military watches. Little did they realize this was the beginning of a huge collection to come. We flew to Elista, Kalmykia, near Chechnya and Dagestan in the Caucuses. It seemed such an oddly specific request by Vadim, but he would know better than I how this was all supposed to work. We made it there in great time, and being further south, it we could actually see the sun. He had arranged for our luggage to be picked up. When we arrived, he shuttled us off in a government vehicle. I grew slightly concerned. “Vadim” I asked, “What’s the deal? Why are we leaving the airport?” “Doctor, I am sorry for the subterfuge”, he said, “As you have surmised already, I do have ulterior motives.” Not exactly what you want to hear when you’re over 10,000 miles from home and a stranger in a very strange land. We wheel into a fairly plush sort of walled building complex. Vadim explains that he wants me to meet with the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia – one Vicktor Basanov. I raise an eyebrow, “Why?” He explains that Kalmykia is an autonomous republic, and as such is included in a ‘Free Market Zone’. Although they officially report to Moscow and are part of the Soviet Union, they can see what’s going to happen. They want to start now to establish projects and deals with Western companies. Particularly Western oil companies. “Oh,” I say, relieved, “Why didn’t you say so? Why all the chicanery?” “We still have many enemies, internal and external. I need to know whom I can trust. Doctor Rock, you I can trust.” He says emphatically. “That you can, Vadim” I reply, “Just next time, clue me in before kidnapping me.” We both chuckle over that as we are escorted into the palace of the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia. We are warmly greeted. Vadim has obviously been busy with something other than just the Siberian oil industry. Mr. Basanov greets me in particular, saying how he’s heard of my exploits and even compliments me on my fashion sense. If this isn’t pump-priming, it’s the prelude to butter-balling. He wants a Western oil deal so bad he can taste it. Now, Kalmykia is a relatively small country, with around 250,000 population. Interestingly enough Kalmykia is the only region in Europe where Buddhism is the most-practiced religion. It produces oil and gas, but therein lies the tale. Its annual oil production is only about 50,000 metric tonnes. However, that oil is metalliferous and very, very waxy. He walks us through Kalmyk oil industry history and shows us samples of the crude produced. I’m taking furious notes and asking innumerable questions. Everyone’s all hyped up. This could actually lead somewhere. Mr. Basanov declares we can only get a limited idea of the potential that lies here in Kalmykia’s oilfields. We need a field trip. Would our schedules allow for such? “In for a dime, in for a dollar”, I say. Once that’s translated and agreed upon, we’re in a Yak-20 Soviet spotter plane, slowly fighting the fierce Caspian Sea coastal headwinds. I look down to the ground which we are only 100 or so feet above. It’s an absolutely flat coastal plain. Bucking this headwind, I figure as the trees below slowly parade under us, we’re doing about 20 miles per hour, ground speed. “Would it help if I got out and pushed?” I asked. Mr. Basanov, in the left-hand seat, looks to me, smiles, and says “It might.” We all have a good laugh. We land at a small airfield just adjacent to an even smaller oil field. We walk from the plane to one of the wells. There are piles and piles of black, gooey glop alongside every wellhead. I already know what they are, but keep mum as to not spoil Mr. Basanov’s little surprise. “You know what these are?” he asks, rhetorically. We say nothing. “They are piles of natural mineral wax. Our oil is cursed with a high degree of both metals and wax. It used to present a huge problem. But we have found a solution!” He beams. “OK, we’re waiting”, I think to myself. “What can you make with wax?” he asks. “Well, there are crayons, sculptures, candles…” we reply. “That’s it! Exactly. Candles. Now, who has a need for a large supply of candles?” he asks further. We think but say nothing. “The Vatican!” he laughs. “They use incredible numbers of candles.” “Hmmm”, we hmmmed”, “Very interesting.” “And we have just signed a protocol to supply the Vatican with candles for the next 25 years!” he says triumphantly. “Fantastic!” we both say, “That’s amazing.” It really was. Making chicken salad out of chicken shit, as it were. “Not only that”, he continues, “But we have just finished a protocol with the adjacent Republic of Dagestan to have exclusive use of their new refinery. It can handle our crudes, extracting all the metals and supplying diesel, jet fuel, petrol, asphalt…” “That’s great” we respond. “Plus, we can sell the nickel, chromium, vanadium and other metals we mine from our crudes.” He says, “It is a veritable…” “…bird nest on the ground!” I finish his sentence for him. Mr. Basanov looks at me, smiles widely, and says, “Yes! Exactly! I like that idiom! Thank you, Doctor.” “My pleasure,” I tell him. We wander around the fields as I take samples for future analysis back in Houston. Vadim is all excited as he’s somehow in on the ground floor of all this. I’m thinking this could be a company maker for the right company, like the one I work for. Back in the Yak, we fly back to Elista and Mr. Basanov’s palace. We make great time with the gusting Caspian tailwinds. We are feted an extravagant banquet. Mostly lamb, rice, shashlik, and fruit. And lots and lots of vodka, beer, and cognac. I ask questions about the proposed structure of a Joint Venture deal with a Western partner. “Doctor Rock,” Mr. Basanov says “I want it as simple as possible. A 50/50 JV with a Western partner. For due consideration, they would have access to any and all data. Plus they would have exclusive exploration and production rights to the entire republic. Everything 50/50, right down the line, even the metals sales.” I am writing furiously. This has all the earmarks of one great deal. Easy access, ports to the south, existing infrastructure, existing production… The Dagestan refinery, metal sales, and Vatican deal are but frosting on a very sweet cake, indeed. I ask for samples of seismic and well data and it was immediately produced. This could rank right up there with our Siberian dealings. In some ways, it will be with many of the same people. We are asked to stay the night and accept. We’re visibly tired and I could use a little downtime. An official car is obtained to take us directly to the airport tomorrow for our flight to Moscow. No mucking about in departures, he’ll ensure our seats and ensure our luggage is on the plane before it leaves. We are to go directly from his palace to the plane. Now that’s VIP treatment. I don’t know how, but since my schedule’s been all shot to hell and back with the fueling problems, he makes certain I have connections directly to Amsterdam. He wishes he could make certain everything was taken care of all the way to Houston, but his power extends only so far. We spend the night as his guest and learn not to make idle wishes become known. Vadim wanted a cold beer and the next thing you know, a case appears in his room. I broke my pencil and remarked that next time, I should be certain to pack a sharpener, not just a knife. A gross of sharpened pencils appeared as if by magic. We are ready to depart when we meet with Mr. Basanov for the final time. We exchange pleasantries and make certain we all have each other’s contact information. Over toasts, we are wished health, happiness, and excellent business dealings. We are both presented ornate carved wooden boxes as parting gifts. I part with my Ray-Bans in the standard until-we-meet-again departing gesture. It’s OK, I have a couple of pairs of knock-offs in my well case. We are whisked to the airport and ushered into the VIP seating on the plane. In three hours, were landing at Domodedovo Airport. We are greeted by an envoy that will gather our luggage. Mine will be sent to Sheremetyevo Airport, and on to Royal Dutch Airlines. Vadim’s going back to Krasnoyarsk. There’s precious little time, so we shake hands and exchange pleasantries. He heads off to Siberia and I’m hurtling along in an official Kalmykian staff car through the streets of Moscow. It’s an easy 2.5 hour trip from Domodedovo to Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow overland. I settle back and ask if I can smoke in here. The driver informs me it is if I so desire. I fire up a heater and sit back, watching the scenery flash by. My driver fires up an awful Russian cigarette. I offer him a Cuban cigar and he almost wrecks us in his attempt to secret it away. I decide there’s no way I’m facing the rest of this sober, thank you very much, so I dig out my emergency flask. It’s been tapped, but it has enough content for the remainder of the trip. We arrive at the airport and there’s a courtesy cart waiting for me, with all my luggage. They will be taking me directly to my flight, none of this mucking about in departures… They hand me my boarding card and go to grab my well case. “No, that’s OK” I tell him, “I’ll handle this, if you don’t mind.” I’ve got enough confidential material with me to probably start a small war. Between several countries. I am deposited at the foot of the big blue 747-400. I am given my luggage claim tags, boarding passes, and onward tickets. I am asked to produce my passport and it is stamped right there at the foot of the aircraft. I’m all legal and ready to go. I look at my seat allocation and it’s B-4, my favorite Business Class seat. I stuff my well case into the overhead compartment and go to plop into my seat for the four-hour flight. But I can’t, there’s a package there. It’s addressed to “Doctor Rock” and stamped with the official seal of the Republic of Kalmykia. Ok, I guess it is mine. I shift it over to an adjacent seat and proceed to get comfortable. I’ve forgotten about the intricately carved box Vadim and I were presented in the palace. However, I retrieve this current package and carefully open it. In it there two bracelets, two necklaces, all of the finest silver and emeralds. Kalmykia’s famous for its emeralds. There are two books in English all about the history and geology of Kalmykia. Plus there’s two traditional dressing gowns made of the finest silk. Heavily brocaded, in that one-size-fits-all draping local costumes tend toward. Intense colors, and incredible stitching. These were articles created by a master craftsperson. There is also a note: “Doctor Rock. So pleased to have you visit our republic. Please accept these gifts for your wife and Mother-in-law. I do so hope we will meet again soon to further our potential joint projects. Best regards, Vicktor Basanov. P.S., Please ask the cabin attendant for the item she’s keeping for you.” He was the nicest Head of a Republic I’ve met to date. I had mentioned Esme and Oma, but only briefly; with business dealings, there really wasn’t much time. This character was one sharp cookie. The package also went into the overhead compartment. The cabin crew produced a double potato juice and citrus, heavy ice, single lime for me. They had thought of everything. We’re flying along, westward this time toward Amsterdam. The flights crowded, but there a couple of spare seats here in Business. I’m finally winding down from my whirlwind Kalmykia tour when I think that it’s OK to take a look at the data I’ve accumulated. I drag down my well case and see the heavily ornate and intricately carved wooden box I received from Mr. Basanov. My curiosity needed to be sated on other things, so I tuck it back in a safe recess of my well case and drag out the Kalmyk data. Even this needed to wait, I‘ve got to go over the Siberian data I collected in Moscow. Then, another thought, Agents Rack and Ruin. I pull out a fresh field notebook and begin to detail my unexpected trip to Kalmykia. Mr. Basanov is the de facto head of state there, so I’m sure my Langley-based buddies would be interested in any Intel I could provide. “Intel?” Gad, I think. “I’ve been infected with an agency virus.” The flight passed quickly and we land, ever so gently, in Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. I gather all the debris I’ve generated in the last four hours and stuff it back into my secure well case. I’ll go over the rest of this on the nine-hour flight to Houston. I’ve got a four-hour layover here, maybe I can get some of it done on the ground instead of in the air. I’m about to deplane, when one of the cabin crew stops me and says she has something that was sent to the plane before I arrived. Evidently it needed to be kept chilled for best effect. She hands me a frosty bottle of Kalmyk Sombucha, which was a fortified fermented tea drink. Evidently, it’s the drink of choice, in this and various other incarnations, of the predominantly Buddhist community in Kalmykia. Loaded down, I toddle off the plane and make a bee-line to the departures board. I find my next departure gate and trundle over to the hemi-Buckminsterfullerene-shaped hut closest. However, first, some calls. I call home but Esme is taking another nap. I talk with Oma and let her know where I am and that I should be walking through the front door in some 15 hours. I ask if everything is OK, and Oma assures me that Khris and Lady are fine and Esme is just tired. Ok, I suppose pregnancy’s very taxing. I didn’t really give two shits about the cat. Then I call work and inform the boss fella of my past few day’s activities. I keep everything low-key and on the QT. He’s pleased I’m returning and have scored a major data coup. He says he’ll see me when I get back to the office. He knows I’ll be jetlagged to hell and back and expects me to take a day or two to recover before coming into the office. Since I’m the only one that can make sense of the data, he says he’ll wait until we both can show up together. Now, I’ve got to re-arrange things, I’ve got so much to carry. I find an empty table in the bar and spread out the non-confidential contents of my well case. Luckily, the have table service, so I am able to secure a cold drink to aid me in my packing. I ask the bartender for a few plastic bags as I want to sequester things according to geography. Eastern Siberia? In bag #1. Kalmykia? Bag #2. Moscow items? Bag #3. Personal effects? Bag #4 Miscellaneous? Bags #5-9. I finally get my shit together, in several senses of the idiom, and settle back with the Moscow field notebook. I review what I’ve written, and edit some of the more ‘unclear’ points. Another drink arrives and I’m feeling much more in control of thing. Finally, order, organization and non-chaos. I settle back, relax, and fire up a heater. I’m almost on my last leg home, I can hardly wait to see my family again. The layover passes quickly and I get in a serious amount of editing and reorganizing my notes. I can whack out dossiers on everyone without any trouble. My agency buddies will be so pleased. My flight is called so I wander over, show my passport and boarding card and I’m down the jetway and to my seat. B-4 again. How nice. I am offered a pre-flight cocktail without even asking. I do so like this airlines. We take off, right on time, and suddenly the reality of my running around these last couple of weeks hit me like a sledgehammer. “Ah, I didn’t want to see that movie anyway.” I think and ditch the headphones. After a quick nosh, I’m doing everything to avoid having my eyelids smash together. I’m tired, comfortable, the roar of the four Pratt and Whitney’s outside provide a calming white noise. Next thing I know, I’m sawing lumber. I’m in New Mexico. I’m out in the field, I know that, but don’t recognize the exact locale. I’m not supposed to be here, but yet, here I am. I hear a voice: “Kǫʼ dził-hastiin.” “Sani?” I am sore perplexed. What the hell is he doing here in Siberia? Wait, I was in Siberia, then Amsterdam. Now I’m in New Mexico. “Sani?” No reply, at least I think there is none. Then a disembodied voice: “Kǫʼ dził-hastiin. We will speak with thee.” Cautiously, “OK”. “There is sad news… about Hweʼesdzáán dził Kǫʼhastiin.” I am told. “What happened to Esme? Tell me!” I yell to them. “She will be fine. It was not time, once again.” I was told. “Enough with the fucking riddles. Tell me...” the penny drops. “Oh, fuck, no. No. NO!” Suddenly, realization. It hit me like a runaway truck. We lost the baby… “We grieve with thee, Kǫʼ dził-hastiin. Do not give in to regret. All will be as it was foreseen. You must have patience. This is what we have been told. As was foreseen, so it will be.” I awaken with a sudden start and scare the shit out of the straights in Business Class. Jennifer, the cabin attendant, comes over and asks if I’m OK. Evidently I’ve been a bit noisy, thrashing around while I was snoozing. “Rock, you look like you’ve seen a ghost. “ Jennifer says. “I don’t know, Jen. I think I heard much worse.” I tell her. I’m shaken to my very core. Maybe it wasn’t a vision or visitation or whatever you want to call it. Maybe it was fatigue, or whadd’ya call it? A fitful dream? Hallucination? Fantasy? Delirium? Anything, please, other than reality. The flight continues and I’m conflicted. What to do? Call home immediately upon landing? Wait until I get home to see what the fuck is going on, if anything? My mind is in a Mixmaster. For once, I really don’t know what to do. My multiple working hypothesis was failing me in a time of intense emotions. We land at Houston intergalactic, and at least this part requires little thinking, which is good as I’m on auto-pilot. Off the plane. Get your luggage. Find a cab. Get your ass home. Still. Do I call home now or wait? I decide to wait. If the unthinkable has happened again, there’s no need for me to know now. Two hours won’t make any difference either way. Off the plane and down to luggage. I really need a cart, I’ve got so much shit to schlep… “Doctor Rocknocker!” I hear a familiar voice behind me. Oh, fuck. It’s my agency buddies, Agents Rack, and Ruin. “Hey, guys. What the hell are you doing here?” I ask, frostily. “Oh, nice. We heard about your little side trip and wanted to be the first to congratulate you. We’ve been trying to get info on that republic for years. You go and are given the Red Carpet Treatment.” Agent Ruin says. “Yeah, all it took was a little kidnapping…” I reply. “Kidnapping?” Agent Ruin asks. “Read it in my report. Now, I really need to get home.” I tell them. “Yeah. We heard about Esme. Sorry, man.” Agent Rack says. I turn very slowly and stare him right in the eye. “What…did…you…say…?” I asked, ready to go into full homicide mode. “Oh, shit. I didn’t think…You hadn’t heard? Esme miscarried six days ago. She’ll be fine, but…Man, I am sorry, I didn’t think. How could you have known?” he says, genuinely sorry. I just drop everything. I feel like I’ve been gut shot. I just want to collapse. We lost another baby. Esme must be devastated. Oma and Esme conspired not to tell me so to spare me the misery on the flights home. I don’t know whether to break down into a puddle, punch the two agents in the nose, or wind my watch. “Doctor? Rock, are you OK” Agent Ruin asks. I regain some small amount of composure. I think back to my last flight and what was told to me. “That’s OK, guys. Just took me off guard. How could you know?” I say, utterly defeated. “OK, let’s get your shit. We’ll drive you home.” Agent Ruin says. I look to them, shake my head, smirk, and say “Fair enough”. We’re heading west on the freeway when I ask the Agents to exit early. There’s a shop I want to stop at first. We finally reach home and the Agents just basically dump me and all my crap in the driveway. “We don’t want to interfere.” Agent Rack says. “Why stop now?” I reply. We shake hands and I confirm I’ll have their reports presently. ’Presently’ currently being undefined. They agree and depart. I ring the doorbell and am promptly creamed by Lady. She seems a little happy to see me. Esme and Oma appear from behind the door. They can recognize with one look that I know their little secret. “Why?” I ask. “We’ll talk later. Let’s get all this stuff in the house first.” Esme says. “No. First, tell me. You are OK?” I plead. “Yes, Rock. I’m OK. Both mentally and physically.” She says. “Well”, I wanly smile, “that makes one of us.” We drag in all my crap and dump it in my office. I’m too tired, too wired, too fried to do much anything else. There’s a knock at the door. Oma answers. I am hugging Esme so hard it’s like if I let go, I’d lose her. I tell her, “This international crap it too difficult right now. Until we get a certain few things sorted, I’m sticking to domestic contracts.” “Rock, not now. Let’s have a sit-down. You look like you could sleep standing up. I’m OK, so let’s just go from there.” she says. “OK, dear. You’re right, I really don’t need the extra drama right now.” I say. We go into the dining room as Oma puts the finishing touches on the huge bouquet of yellow roses I ordered for Esme on the way home. “Yellow roses. Your favorite. Represent hope.” I say. Esme clouds up and almost begins bawling. I’m right behind her in that department. Oma sniffles a bit, too. We recover and I opt for a strong drink. Oma has her favorite tea and Esme opts for one of the orange Fantas I smuggled back from Siberia. “Sweet, innit?” I ask her. “Good Lord, it’s like drinking orange-flavored straight glucose syrup.” She tells me. “Oh, I’ve got a few things for y’all.” I recalled and get my well case. Then I remember Esme and Oma don’t even know of my side trip to Kalmykia. Over the next couple of hours, I fill them in on that adventure. I ask Esme to choose a number, 1, or 2. She chooses two so she gets gown #2. Oma receives Kalmyk gown #1. Although Oma drowns in her dressing gown, she loves it. Esme can easily alter it to fit her better. Esme looks absolutely stunning in her purple, red, and yellow silk dressing gown. I distribute the necklaces and bracelets. They are very happy with their gifts. I have several gifts for Khris from Siberia, Moscow, and Kalmykia. But she’s sleeping now so that can wait a little while. I’m going through my well case to see if I missed anything. I find the carved Buddhist wooden box Mr. Basanov gave us before we left. I had forgotten clean about it. I hand it to Esme. She examines it and asks what it is. I tell her I don’t know, just an intricately carved box, covered with weird calligraphs, hieroglyphs, and runes. Oma looks at it and says it’s quite heavy for wood. She points out a tab on the bottom. She presses it and it pops the box open like a large box of wooden matches. She hands it back to Esme and I tell her “Open it, I have no idea what’s in there.” She does and extracts a bronze statue. “What the actual…?” I mumble aloud. Esme, Oma, and I look at the stature. It’s obviously Buddha, sitting, with a female facing him, on his lap. It’s extraordinary, incredibly detailed and appears to be quite old. We refer to our Encyclopedia Britannica and find out it’s a Buddha & Shakti Statue. It’s nice, in a weird sort of way. We continue to read the encyclopedia entry and come across: “This harmonious statue depicts Buddha and Shakti in an intimate embrace. Their union evokes balance between the active, masculine figure of compassion (karuna) and skillful method (upaya), and the passive, feminine figure of wisdom (prajna). ** It is commonly used to promote fertility.**” I look to Es and she looks back. I’ve told her about my New Mexico dream on the plane. She says: “Well, if we have Sani and his crowd and now Buddha pulling for us, maybe things will eventually work out.” “Perhaps it wasn’t time, this time,” I say. “However, there will be a next time. I was told it has been foreseen.” Only time will tell.

2018.12.13 11:34 HajimeilosuknaTPP Fused Crystal Summary: Day 2
Previously on Fused Crystal: We met our new host Y and the incredible world he’s found himself in where all of the Pokemon have been fused across species and potentially a rogue Rocket has been found still on the loose. We were given a rare Pokemon from Prof. Elm and asked to start our journey after meeting with Professor Oak. However, this journey is going to be far from normal due to the randomization of not only the Pokemon fusions, but also the placement of items, which has allowed for some issues and alternative paths our Mister Y has been able to take. With the road to Ecruteak, Goldenrod, Azalea Town and potentially beyond all already opened, who knows where this Run will take us yet!
The amount of potential sequence breaking is staggering as we find a new key item right out of the gate: WE FOUND THE CLEAR BELL LYING ON THE FLOOR IN UNION CAVE XD Mister Y has no idea what such a beautiful and melodious item could mean, but it sounds lovely and he takes it with him.
On that note, we’ve been finding a lot of TMs on the ground, so even if there hasn’t been a point to point them out, by this point we have somehow obtained Solarbeam, Zap Cannon, Giga Drain, and Earthquake to name a few. Nice collection. XD
On the other side of Union Cave sits the normally gorgeous village of flowers, Azalea Town. It’s not much to look at with all the snow, and even less when there’s now Slowbuto around. Hmmm… Where are they, actually? Y goes to heal up and does a bit of poking around town before deciding to get some more PokeBalls. Before he gets to the market though, he sees a house with a sign labeled for custom Poke Balls and is rather curious as he steps up to “Kurt’s House” to see what that’s all about. Considering his living, Kurt is right to assume the strange young man is there to ask about some custom balls, but admits there’s no time for that right now. Has the lad not seen the trouble? The Slowbuto are gone and Team Rocket- Does Y even know about Team Rocket? Well Kurt’s in too big a hurry to let him answer, and just tells the boy anyway. They’re an evil group that’s cruel to Pokemon by hurting them or making them do their dirty work. And right now they’re at the Well cutting off Slowbuto tails to sell! (Y is aware of them being sold but to learn the source is from Rockets taking them by force --and from here no less where the Slowbuto are considered sacred!) Kurt is too fired up just thinking about to even bother asking if the young man can help and charges out the door to give those Rockets a piece of his mind!
Y decides this seems like a bad idea and hurries after the old man to head into the well. Sure enough, Y finds Kurt looking pretty banged up near the entrance and gets jumped by a nearby Rocket who yells at him how the old man caused them both to fall down the well! He’s so mad, he’s gonna take his anger out on Y for glaring at him like that! After getting whooped by Tess, the Rocket Grunt seems to have calmed down as he’s sure the boy has questions for him. Yeah, Team Rocket’s down here and sure they’re cutting off tails for profit. So what, kid? That’s how the make money! He’s disarmed, so rather than waste time with him, Y decides to just keep going. When he finds the first of the Slowbuto, Y can’t help but notice this one seems to be holding some Mail and decides to read it. It doesn’t actually have anything secret or helpful, but it does tell him that this one actually belongs to someone since it’s addressed to a girl from her father and asks her to look after the house with her grandfather. Oh… ;o; It’s already been harvested too.
As he’s distracted with that, Y gets attacked by one of the tail hackers who asks the boy what he’s after. If he’s out to interrupt their work, he’s got another thing coming! … It’s times like this our hosts are SO LUCKY they get teleported to the Pokemon Center when they black out, because losing here would probably have Y pretty dead right about now. The team put up a good fight, but honestly we were way hurt to start and UV Triple Threat kept missing. A second attempt somehow goes even worse. OTL
Y decides to try training PG4 up a bit before trying that again and Tess gets a fun alternative nickname from the Chat. In the same vein as other awesome bird predecessors, she gets the hashtag: OrbAndSavior. tppLUL
Heading back to Proton the Rocket Grunt, Mister Y seems to have figured a new plan for dealing with him and puts Bii in front with Stun Spore at the top. The Rocket only has one Pokemon, a Murfish, so even if it turns out the Flying typing cancels out the Grass weakness, Y can hope to at least slow it down so the rest of the team can go on the all out offensive. Sure enough, Bii gets in the powder and a few hits, and JKilt got in a hit too before Tess was able to just barely finish it off! Victory! 8O The Rocket is more miffed than stunned to be losing and warns Y that he may have won today, but next time he won’t be so lucky… He’s actually abnormally calm about losing really and explains what he figures Y has been wondering. Yeah, Team Rocket broke up a few years ago, but several members were keeping active underground. Really, he seems to admire Y a bit and tells him he should just sit back and watch the Rockets do their thing in making trouble because this is really just the beginning. … Poof!
With the whole group seeming to have vanished, Y just looks around in wonder as Kurt suddenly comes up behind him to check on all the Slowbuto. He congratulates the boy on sending those Rockets running and explains he’s doing well enough to make it back out of the well if Y wouldn’t mind helping him get back to his house. After a quick rest at the Ball Maker’s house, Kurt tells Y that he handled himself like a hero back there! (Which means a lot considering Y has noooot the been the best at this so far…) Honestly for all he’s done, the old man says he’d be honored to make him custom Poke Balls any time! However, all he can give the boy for now is a Max Elixir as thanks. XD See, Kurt doesn’t have any to give right now, but if Y could find him an Apricorn, he could make his special Apricorn Poke Balls from it overnight. Oh! Turns out Y actually has one already and hands over a Black Apricorn. Since he needs to find something to do the rest of the day, guess it’s off to see what else is in the area.
Well… considering we just chased off a bunch of Rockets he’s actually not that surprised when he suddenly has Rocket come running up to him in a huff about something or other now. The redhead wants Y to tell himself. Is it true that Team Rocket is back in action? Y just nods along and points out the well which just causes Rocket to laugh. What, like Y actually beat them or something? That’s a joke! …. No joke? In that case Rocket wants to battle and see how tough he’s gotten! Not tough enough as… blackout.
Since we can't get to the forest without dealing with Rocket, it seems the best thing to do is get stronger before making a second attempt. Well since there's no longer the ~evil Team Rocket~ to guard the place anymore, looks like Azalea Town Gym would be a great place to start training! It's an interesting place, made to mimic a forest or greenhouse and filled with Bug Catchers eager to learn from “The Walking Encyclopedia of Bug Pokemon” as the sign out front declared. All the more reason for Y to be surprised when he actually meets Bugsy. The Leader is actually very young for a Gym Leader but explains that he never loses when it comes to Pokemon. He's obsessed with the Bug Type and hopes to eventually become THE authority on the study of Bugs, but he's a master in the study not actually using them. He's got a Dratsprout like Rocket had in his battle, and the grim and the terrible Octurn. (Actually, I now wonder if these are all Bug Catchers since even with the trainers they had mostly water and poison types with one guy having a Slugeco which I assume is a Bug / Fire mix as the exception. I like to imagine that this Bugsy works best in understanding and destroying Bugs by using the Dratsprout's sweet, oozing, gaping maw to attract the Bug types and then literally guns them down with Octurn given the Octillery side is based off an octopus and old fashioned tank and Lanturn is based off an angler fish, sounds like the ultimate underwater predator. D8 ) The team did fairly well but the hunter proved to be too much as Y faced another blackout.
Well it’s not that we really NEED to train outside of town, but why keep pressing Bugsy when Y just needs a little more work to get Bii to evolve into a Skipleef! 8D
Okay, with a few more levels and a power boost under his belt, it’s back to Bugsy for round 2! We start with Tess at the lead this time, only to find out that Dratsprout has Thunder Wave before knocking it out, making it harder for her to get in a hit on the following Octurn. The duo then prove their skill as Octurn now used Supersonic to induce the “Parafusion” technique which eventually caused Tess to knock herself out. Sending out Bii put a stop to that though as the ultimate underwater predator bears a strong weakness to her Razor Leaf attack, allowing her to take it out with ease! Having lost his main threat, Bugsy sends out a Squiroppip (oh hey, still fits with the theme of laying down crippling powder and drawing in with sweet scent I’d assume) but it seems Bii can’t think of anything to do but throw powder back at it with her getting Stun Spore’d and him constantly falling unconscious to Sleep Powder before she finally seems to get over the dead eyed stare long enough to Razor Leaf it for the win! We did it! \o/ Bugsy must admit Y to being a real expert after all with that tactical display (... sure) and confers on him the Rising Badge! …. Huh. It’ll let Mister Y use Waterfall outside of battle (when we still can’t Surf yet) and forces ALL Pokemon to obey him, even if they were traded! 8D Y couldn’t ask for a better present after the luck he’s been having. And the exterminator is even nice enough to give Y an Escape Rope he discovered. … Thanks. XD Otherwise, Bugsy doesn’t have much advice to offer, but admits his research hasn’t been completed yet. What Y should keep in mind though is to follow his passion, what makes him happy, and study his favorites. We’ll keep in that in mind for the road ahead…
… Especially when we have someone just outside who seems to refuse happiness or passion as we return to our meeting place with Rocket. The redhead STILL refuses to believe Y had anything to do with the Rockets fleeing the area, and sets out to crush him and any hope he has of being considered “a real Trainer”. >O To be fair, the team hasn’t recovered from Bugsy’s battle yet and his Arbutor is a force to be reckoned with. Heal us up with another blackout, would ya, buddy?
Going back to Rocket for a third time, we see what was feared and there is no sign of the Pokemon he stole from the Lab. Granted, the Voices have had a good laugh at how weak all of the Starters seemed to be, I guess Rocket really did dump his off somewhere. Or actually, let me Lore a moment while Mister Y is getting his butt handed to him by an angry Rocket.
So Rocket may have abandoned the Squiroppip....Or gave it to Bugsy. Which is very likely since the Leader seemed more in tune with his Octurn than anything and Rocket now has the Grass / Poison-type Arbutor that would have fit well Bugsy's two more predatory teammates. And where was our rival during the Rocket takeover anyway if he's so intent on beating those thrives down? I've a feeling his anger at Y chasing them out of town is less he doesn't believe him and more that has mad he didn't get to be the one to do it due to his “weak Pokemon” not being able to kick out the guard that had him and the others trapped inside the Gym. D8
Round 4 with Rocket, its time we do this! Rocket starts out with a mean looking Kakunypuff to square against Tess, but a swift Peck takes it out no problem! Rocket then sends out his Swinpy which keeps raising its Defense much Y's annoyance, so he switches over to JKilt instead. Being Lv4, this was a dumb idea. He tries PG4 next, but the Cheshire Cat head gets frozen before she can do any damage! D8 Next up is UV Triple Threat who tries to go in the hit when she gets growled at, lowering her attacks against the beefy pachyderm. There had to be a way to get rid of that stat boost… The Ledylithe gives a Roar and forces Rocket to send in the beast, which takes out UV with a couple of Bite attacks. That's okay though cause we still have Tess, our “Orb and Savior” who gets in some major damage with Peck before she too falls to the Arbutor's relentless Bites. Last time, Feb was able to withstand a single attack from the hydra-like creature but the Arbutor gets in a crit on the first attack. (F-ing brutal, Rocket, he's just a baby! >O ) And thus, Bii is completely on her own. Fortunately, there's not much left as it fights to keep going, so No I takes the initiative and Tackles it to the ground! The Dinky comes back though and Bii starts to panic at the thought of ice, spamming Sleep Powder even after its safely asleep and finally calms down enough to use Razor Leaf. We won! 8O
Rocket doesn't take the loss very well and says the only reason Y won is because his Pokemon are weak. But don't think it will always be this way! Rocket plans on getting stronger, strong enough to crush Team Rocket even! They talk big, but fighting Y, he's figured it out; they're not so tough when Y could take them down one at a time, right? Rocket hates weaklings, Pokemon, Trainers, the Rockets, all of them! And that goes doubly for Y right now since he only won through persistence. He's still a weak trainer and getting in Rocket's way is just distracting the redhead from time he should be training. Why did he even mess with this chump? He storms off into the forest, but Y decides to be smart and heal up before daring to follow.
Into the Ilex Forest, Y meets a young boy who explains he's the Charcoal Maker's apprentice. However, he's glad to see another face in these woods because he needs help right now (and likely the last guy to pass through was a real jerk about it.) See, he doesn't have Bugsy's gym badge yet, so his master's Pokemon won't obey him. Finding the Farfetch'd is not the problem, but the boy cries how it keeps running from him whenever he gets close. If Y could somehow chase it back to the entrance, then they could corner it and catch it together! Sounds like a plan that could go wrong so many ways, but sure, he'll give it a shot. Trust the Voices, Mister Y, we got this. XD
Y heads down the open pathway until he finds a very lost looking bird of some kind. Curious, he goes up to the…. Farfeparce? And sure enough, it runs away. The chase is on as he keeps pushing it closer and closer to the entrance where he goes up to catch it and-! Oh! It seems the Charcoal Master has come looking for the boy and got ahold of that “bird” instead. The master is amazed at Y’s wrangling skills though in getting their Farfeparce back and rewards him with an Up-grade! …. Great… XD Since there’s no way to proceed from here, Y has no choice but to take the LOOOOONG way to Goldenrod and starts making his way through town to head back to Violet City.
Y doesn’t seem to be in any hurry though, perhaps after dealing with Team Rocket he’s just living life right now. Or maybe it’s Rocket’s words that have him on the down low. Either way, he does a bit of training with Feb (finally~!) and goes ice skating in Violet City. At first he decides to head for Ecruteak City just to take in the sights and take on a few trainers he tried to avoid or lost miserably to in his first attempts to visit, but he does eventually head for the National Park so he can get into the city without Cut.
And while passing through the park, Tess has evolved into Noctdrio! 8O Looks like now we’ve a “hydra” of our own to square off against Rocket’s Arbutor~!
At last! We have reached the great city of Goldenrod, the largest city in all of Johto! So great that even this snow doesn’t hold a candle to it as we wander the perfectly paved streets. After healing up, it’s off to the Department Store to see what goodies Y can find. … Mostly PokeBalls before heading out for some late night badger hunting in the fields just south of the city. Of course
And while wandering around and exploring the surrounding areas UV Triple Threat evolved into Ledianine! >D …. O.O Due to this amazing new development, the chat seems to have given her an actual nickname “The Olden Retriever” XD
I know this one was intentional, but it’s kind of funny after getting in a fight with an officer for looking suspicious as an outsider wandering the streets after dark, it seems Mister Y was to agree it’s very late and decides to crash As we come back to find it’s now day, I really do think he just decided to camp out. But no Voices allowed! >O All rested up and in much higher spirits, Y goes to spend some time in the park and call home. Mom seems surprised to hear that Y has made it all the way to the National Park already and tells him she’s rooting for him on the rest of his journey. Thanks, Mom ;o;
While just enjoying the park, Y also finds out that there’s a Bug Catching Contest today, but he needs to heal up before he can enter! Onward toward Ecruteak then, the Center is closer! 8O Tragically, on the way back we caught a Gravitar in the grass and got a call from Bill who says our PC box is filled up and needs to be switched before we can catch anymore. D8 I say tragically, because now Y can’t enter the… or… maybe he can enter the contest? And win second place with a Scythemite? That he got to send to his PC??? I feel I may have missed something but it seems the Devs were nice enough to cause the PC to rollover boxes? Cause I really don’t see any point where we went to change it ourselves 8O <3
Well happy day, Y is off to the Gym! Time to get back to hero-ing. The Goldenrod City Gym is a bit of a maze, but it's more like a marketplace with crates upon crates of fake (or maybe real?) goods and small bushes. Y starts off with some much needed switch-training for Feb and Kilt as he makes way passed the numerous girls who seem to think he's going to judge them as weak for being girls and using cute Pokemon. (Again, I've a feeling it's because the last guy to pass through was quite the red headed jerk.)
Reaching the Leader, Whitney explains that she really only started as a trainer because it was the popular thing to do. (Makes sense given the large city, Pokemon wouldn't be so much a necessity to go gathering things from the fields or for protection in having to go to the next town to need something. Outside of the park what would a kid need to worry about when Goldenrod kind of has everything from the Dept. Store to entertainment, to the underground services to help keep your pets in good condition?) However, Y should know that she's been named leader for a reason, she's really good at this! Whitney starts out with a Kabutoraid that gets quickly knocked down with a Mega Drain from PG4 and so she sends in her Taurantler instead. Y is feeling so confident, he decided ls to switcheroo Kilt to gain extra points before sending in Tess to deal with it. While the bullish buck does manage to get in some damage with Horn Attack, Teas freezes it with a Tri Attack and goes for the finish while it can't move. Savage. XD
In fact, that defeat was so harsh, Whitney immediately starts crying and can't bring herself to give Y a badge. Y feels bad and starts to leave when the nearby girl stops him to ask if he was the one who made Whitney upset. It's okay if he did though because this is actually normal of Whitney to start crying when she loses. In that case, he goes back to her to ask about the badge and she admits she totally forgot about that. Well here he goes, he earned it! We got the Plain Badge! 8O ….Wait, what? That's actually not random! XD It allows the team to use Strength outside of battle and increases our speed! Whitney also gives Mister Y a Parlyz Heal to remember her by. Isn't it cute~? Yeah, it sure is. 83
Y heads to check out the Underground, hearing about a market or something that helps out Pokemon, only to find a ton of shady looking trainers that seem to haunt the place. On the upside, he also finds HM02 on the ground. Fly get! 8O Some of the Voices laugh at more sequence breaking, but until we find the Storm Badge, there will be no such flying just yet. However, we can still teach it, and who better to give it to than Tess! <3 He also discovers a door hidden down a narrow hallway, but it seems to be locked. … Curious, but we’ll keep that in mind.
After another long stint in the park for training and generally enjoying the pleasant air (... guess Y isn’t much of a city kid, huh? ) he heads to Ecruteak to heal up but decides he’d like to stay there for a while instead. He meets a man who is surprised to see he’s off on an adventure with his Pokemon and asks him if he’d be up for some ~treasure hunting~ but Y tells him he’d rather not multiple times. Still, he would like any help the man has to offer since he seems so persistent and the kind NPC gives us HM01! 8O He says that Y can use it for clearing out trees to hidden paths and for finding items in the grass, but really Y can use it for a lot more than that. However, the man points out likely the reason he has no need for it, is that Y can’t do any of those things until he can get the Hive Badge from Fuschia City. Fuschia City? How are we gonna get out there??? D8 Well… Y seems to have an idea and heads for the Burnt Tower where he finds Eusine and Morty still hanging out. There’s someone else here who might know a way to get to Kanto though, someone who quite possibly dropped an S.S. Ticket earlier that Y doesn’t know what is for.
Rocket still ain’t happy to see Y, and goes on the aggressive for him just showing up. This time it seems he’s got four Pokemon now, starting with a Draginbell (technically we already saw this from our sequence breaking earlier, but it’s evolved from the one in Azalea Town so… -shrugs- make of that what you will) that goes for the kill with Dragon Rage. Y doesn’t put up with this, even at the sacrifice of Kilt since a switch would be giving Rocket some free shots, and uses he just as quickly takes out the grass snake with Tess! Rocket reveals his new member is an Electetic which uses Sweet Kiss to confuse her and then drops her down with Sonic Boom. Even if Tess managed to get a Tri Attack out the first time, she self destructs on the second after hurting herself. Fortunately, Bii manages to get out a Leech Seed to help buy some time as the Electetic goes for the same strategy with Sweet Kiss on her too. Bii tries to tackle the annoying thing but doesn’t do much… fortunately Leech Seed was able to finish it off. Next up, Rocket sends out a Bellsander which puts Bii to sleep and then Rages on her until she wakes up to almost finish it off, but then gets knocked out. PG4 gets sent in and goes all in with Pay Day to get the win on Bellsander and then keep the damage rolling with Rocket’s last Pokemon; Nidorasaur. Seems there’s something to be said about loyalty as while Rocket seems to have traded in nearly his whole team since last time (well, they were considered “weak” for losing…) Y gets to show some love in some tactical healing when the cat got in red and then PG4 seemed to thank him by landing a crit with MOAR PAY DAY to finish him off!
Rocket gets super salty in saying how this is why he hates fighting with losers because there’s no real challenge to it. Y may have won this time, but there’s no WAY he’d be able to stand up to the Legendary Pokemon even if could find it. Y didn’t come here to go monster hunting like everyone else did though, but before he could even try to show Rocket what he needed him for, the old boarding of the damaged floors seems to give out due to their fighting and Y falls into the blackness below. (Eh, he’s pretty used to it after screwing around in the Ruins of Alph. XD ) Rocket just calls him an idiot for allowing himself to fall through instead of moving and yells down at him how it serves him right!
Y shakes off the pain and dust as he tries to make sense of where he landed. It’s a huge space, almost shrine-like in how it seems he’s landed on the middle platform to some tiered staging area. He gets up and turns to see there’s even some statues on the higher level and goes to investigate the beautiful and almost life-like sculptures when suddenly… a cry! The figure on the left suddenly starts to turn golden and bright with a crackle of electricity, the one on the right lets out a roar as it’s red and brown details light up with a low surge for flames, and the one right in front of him? A mystical sparkle of blue filled with psychic energy. Unable to let out a cry, Y just tenses up as the strange beings come to life, the two at the back ripping themselves from their placing and charging out of the building with a blinding speed! But the central figure seems to study him, holding him in place with it’s mind as it comes to investigate him before coming back to it’s place in front of him and lets out another cry. What… what did that mean? Whatever it thought of him, it must not have been good since it immediately turned tail and fled like the other two.
It seems all the commotion has caught the attention of those upstairs as Y starts to leave and finds Eusine just staring at all this from from the bottom of the three tiers. The mystical man explains that he dug a hole here recently hoping to find evidence in the basement but damn! That was Suitwo, wasn’t it?! He’s been searching for the Legendary for ten years now, and he finally saw it! Of course, it seems Mister Y was able to draw them out, and for that, Eusine has to thank him for… whatever he did. There’s an old tale in Ecruteak that the Legendary Pokemon show themselves to those they are ready to test. Could it be that Suitwo is testing them? Eusine has to find out, and decides he MUST track the beast before it gets away! (Don’t worry, Y, he’ll leave the ladder at least.) Until they meet again, good luck!
Good luck indeed… But Y still doesn’t know what all this means. Is he really going to be tested? Was his even falling down here part of that? What strange and terrifying creatures those were. And he STILL has no answers about getting to Fuschia. Ah well, there’s a few things he knows for sure he can do in the meantime. Ecruteak has a gym, and he’s already met with the Leader. The sages in town refused to be seen by anyone without Olivine’s Gym Badge, so he could move on to the next town too. Well, it’s not much to go off of, but at least there’s a plan. Time to get out of this dump!
Upon leaving the Burnt Tower, Y is quite literally cornered by an old man who hadn’t been there before (he walked forward and stopped to talk to us from a point that was blocking the only path out of the small square) and decides to tell him the history of the place. Mysterious, isn’t it? In the distant past, the Burnt Tower was actually a glistening tower much like the one to the east. But a terrible fire broke out and three nameless Pokemon were killed in the flames. A rainbow colored Pokemon descended upon it and resurrected them. And so, this is the story passed down from Gym Leader to Gym Leader for the past few generations. A Pokemon able to bring back the dead…? The old man gives a laugh as to how he knows all this and says he was a trainer back in the day. Ho...ho...ho… D8
Y spends a bit of time beating at the walls of his small imprisonment until the old man has his back turned and makes a run for it, fleeing straight into the gym. Morty! Help! What was THAT all about?! He doesn’t actually get to see Morty though as he gets most of the way through the gym and then decides to heal up and buy PokeBalls before risking a blackout. As night descends over the city though, Mister Y decides to head for the fields again and maybe go see if he can reach Olivine before morning.
We run into Dana again who asks if Y has gotten to be a good trainer, and this time he’s able to actually prove himself with Tess’ help. \o/ We also run into a schoolboy named Chad that owns a Togetape and Feb is suddenly faced with his future. Chat immediately decides they must do one of two things; get rid of Feb before he can become ugly, or just never let him evolve. XD
Upon entering Olivine, Y runs into none other than Rocket who seems a bit miffed that not only do Y seem to follow him, but that he's perfectly fine after that fall just a few hours before. Rocket sneers how he just left the Gym, but the Leader is currently at the Lighthouse tending to a sick Pokemon. Boohoo, just let sick Pokemon go! He doesn't have time for this. But maybe Y should go train at the Lighthouse. Might make him a little less weak.
With Rocket gone again, Y decides he's not even going to bother and instead heads into town. Oh! The sea! He's good to remember he can't cross the ocean with his mad ice skating skills, but he can still cross by boat… He heals up at the Pokemon Center where a woman tells him about some braggart across the sea always going on about his rare Pokemon. A man in the Center brings up that next door is a guy who taught his Pokemon Strength. All good information for later, but for now Y heads for the docks where his S.S Ticket matches the S.S Aqua in the port. The sailor guarding the ramp asks if Y would like to board the ship and maybe he's just feeling rather gutsy today, but yeah, he would. A big beautiful ship, wonder where it's heading…
Shortly after boarding the vessel, Y nearly gets run over by a Gentleman looking for his granddaughter. She’s a little thing, so he pleads with the boy help him out if he can and runs off. Y would love to help but after looking for a while, he reaches a hallway where the sailor standing by refuses to let him pass and tells him to go find his partner who’s clearly goofing off somewhere. He must look very sharp for all these people to think he has any ideas about anything around here. Welp, can’t say no, so time to start checking rooms. It’s totally cool since he’s on the crew’s orders. -w-
We find out from a FireBreather that this ship is heading for Kanto! 8O He still gives us a rough time in battle, but Y still takes all this in stride. And even more perks to this unexpected, trip, Y discovers he even gets to have his own room on the ship for healing up the team. This’ll be fun~! Only not as he finds the lazy sailor he was told to kick back into order and have most of the team pretty battered, but he seems to heal up the team as an apology and explains how he was just tired from all his physical labor. He’ll get back to work now, thanks kid. <3
Y heads back to the sailor who put him up to this, and while the guy doesn’t so much as give him a thank you, he doesn’t do anything to stop him either. After fighting all the known trainers on board, Y heads to the only place he hasn’t been yet and finds the Captain’s Quarters. No surprise, it just also happens to be where the missing girl has ended up and she’s yammering away at the old man how bored she is. She then turns to see Y has come along and asks him if he’ll play with her too. Eventually he leads her back to her room where she tells her grandpa how she got to play with Y and the Captain and it was awesome! The gentleman is glad to see she’s okay, and thanks Mister Y for entertaining her. He gives us an Elixir as thanks. Before much else can be said though, the intercom pages everyone on board to let them know that we’ve arrived in Vermillion City! 8D Guess it’s time we say goodbye to our little friend, and introduce Y to the land farther from home than he’s ever been before.
(I will point out at this time since we’re at a nice break, I am slow and only JUST realized Kilt and Bii have somehow returned to being male. Okay! \ -shrug / )
Despite Vermillion City having it’s own Gym, Y can’t access it without Surf or Cut. As it stands, it seems he’d much rather go face Sabrina since he doesn’t really look around either Vermillion or Saffron City before heading inside her lair. … And then common sense seems to hit him that he hasn’t healed and has a ton of money to spend before losing it in a blackout. Good boy XD Good thing too because heading into the gym reveals that no matter how much Mister Y wants to see the Mistress of Mystery, the trainers here are WELL out of his league right now.
Maybe this was a bad idea after all… Y does a little bit of sightseeing around town before he eventually goes to the Magnet Train Station to head home. Except, he learns a terrible truth that the train isn’t running right now. A man explains how the Magnet Train works using magnets and electricity, but when there’s no electricity available it can’t operate. Does this… is he… There’s no going back now, is there? Unless Y can either hold out until the problem gets fixed or head north to see what the problem might be. Either way, he’s not going anywhere any time soon. After this conflict and on its formal basis, the Ukrainian government introduced the so-called “martial law” (ML) in the country for a month. “How should these events be interpreted?” our readers ask us. First of all, it is worthwhile to remember V. I. Lenin’s words that we all will remain stupid fools in politics, if we do not learn to see the interests of certain social classes underlying these or those events, actions, facts and incidents. This means, in this case, that the maritime conflict did not occur by chance, but was organized by the Ukrainian oligarchy on the instructions of its western “partners” and, possibly, in collusion with a part of the RF biggest bourgeoisie. What did the imperialists need this conflict for? It is safe to assume the following.In the Ukraine, as it turns out, there are still quite a lot of assets belonging to the Russian oligarchy. With the introduction of “martial law” (under any vain pretext), the state that has been attacked, has the right to confiscate the assets and holdings of the foreign abuser. In other words, such a “martial law” is a legitimate excuse for the next local redistribution of capitalist property or the market. This redistribution of assets and the arrest (confiscation) of money holdings of the Russian Federation (which are considerable currency sums) gives the Ukrainian and American bourgeoisie almost pure “gangster” income, when quite cheap, with little expenditure of capital and government forces, billions fall into the pockets of one handful of international robbers looted before by another gangster bunch. Provocation of the conflict in the Kerch Strait, undoubtedly, is aimed at probing the combat readiness of the Black Sea Fleet and the North Caucasus Military District of the Russian Federation. Such “reconnaissance in force” is very important for the West, since tracking the actions of the Russian armed forces in this situation reveals, in general terms, the nature of operational deployment and grouping that can be effected by the Russian Federation in the struggle for control of the Black Sea and the Caucasus in the initial operations of the future war for the redistribution of this crucially important region. For that matter: the Ukraine’s introduction of “martial law” may lead to the closure of the Turkish straits for the merchant (oil and gas) marine of the Russian Federation – under the pretext of its becoming the aggressor country and based on the Ukraine’s protest as a victim country to the UN Security Council. The closure of one of the oil and liquefied gas exporting to Europe channels for the Russian oligarchy allows the largest Western monopolies to quickly occupy the niches in the fuel market active so far for Gazprom, Rosneft and other companies that directly determine the policy of the Russian government. It is also clear that in the context of regional “martial law” or local war, the construction of gas pipelines in the Black Sea region is hampered or completely disrupted. One should not discount Syrian affairs, too. It will be difficult for the Russian Federation government to supply and maintain its imperialist grouping in Syria only by air or by detour, through the Baltic and northern ports – if the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles are closed for the Black Sea Fleet. In this case, the entire eastern region of the Mediterranean Sea, with the most important sea trade routes from Syria to Europe passing there, is overtaken by the USA and NATO, since without the Black Sea Fleet one weak squadron of the Northern Fleet will have little clout there. In the event that a number of states in Western Asia and the Middle East under the US pressure temporarily close their airspace for aviation of the RF (as the aggressor state), there will be nothing to support the expeditionary force conducting the imperialistic interests of the Russian bourgeoisie in Syria. And this means that Syrian positions of Shell, British Petroleum, Morgan Bank, and other Western institutions will become stronger, and the fight for the redistribution of the most advantageous Syrian transport corridor (Persian Gulf – Europe), the country’s domestic market, oil and gas fields and raw materials processing facilities will be won by the US, British and French imperialists. Further. The official placing (allegedly temporary and partial) of the politics and economy of the Ukraine on the war footing means the following: — all domestic debts of the Ukrainian bourgeoisie get frozen and charged off, first of all, the debts to the working class and other workers on wages and social benefits – without resuming them in the event of the abolition of the “martial law”; — wholesale and retail prices for basic necessities are rising, without indexation of wages and compensation payments to low-income categories of the population (without a reverse decrease in such prices after the abolition of the ML); — the so-called “military labor service” can be introduced, which means the open transition of the Ukrainian big bourgeoisie to the system of fascist concentration camp slavery, which in these conditions provides the bourgeoisie with the desired maximum profit. Due to what? Due to the fact that the salary in this system is abolished, the rate of exploitation surges manyfild, and the allowance costs for “military” slaves are reduced to the minimum capital expenditures on the barrack-huts and the starvation rations; — under the guise of a farce with the introduction of “martial law” by the Ukrainian “hawks”, that is, the fascist and most aggressive part of the Ukrainian oligarchy (with the American bourgeoisie behind them), the largest raid is made on the “moderate” Ukrainian oligarchs and big capitalists, who are not currently interested in a big war, – with the purpose of further redistribution of markets and capital within the Ukraine. Moreover, these “moderates” can be expropriated from two sides at once: both in Ukraine – under the slogan of “fighting Russian agents in the Ukrainian rear”, and in Russia, where they have property and capital — by routine order, under the pretext of “a sharp fall of reliability and creditworthiness of the Ukrainian partners “. In this sense, in Russia, the assets of some Ukrainian “hawks”, including those of President of the Ukraine P. Poroshenko, are also at risk of “nationalization”. This circumstance indirectly indicates that in the conflict in the Kerch Strait a certain part of Russian major businessmen and high-ranking officials having views of the capital and the market sector of their Ukrainian colleagues could indeed be interested; — channels are officially opened for the sale of large bulks of weapons to the Ukraine by major companies in the USA and Britain. “Martial law” removes a number of international restrictions on the supply of arms through inter-governmental transactions. This means that such American and British weapon monsters as Bell, Pratt-Whitney, Lockheed, Rolls-Royce and National Diremix do stand to gain from the Kerch conflict.Finally (and this is the main thing!), civil rights and freedoms in the Ukraine, as well as in the European countries bordering on it, and possibly in Turkey, are even more and harder collapsing. The fascist-Gestapo struggle with the revolutionary movement of the working class is intensifying to the limit. The bourgeoisie, already directly observing its historical end, is preparing for the extreme steps in its salvation, in extending the exceptional position in society. In this sense, the conflict it has started in the Sea of Azov gives amunition to the entire world bourgeoisie, because it provides a weighty reason to tighten all the fascist screws in all capitalist countries. Today, it is the Ukrainian oligarchy that especially needs the “martial law”. The country clearly shows signs of the organization of the working masses, while the “fermenting agent” of such semi-elemental organizations is often made by the young “ATO veterans”, i.e., former participants in the war in Donbass. Who are these people? These are our ordinary workers, employees, self-employed, who had had to participate in a small imperialist war, after which, having gained combat experience and a certain correction of consciousness, they returned to production, to their impoverished and powerless civilian life. For the time being, they are uniting mainly on economic grounds. But the development of modern capitalism itself, the aggravation of the needs and hardships of rank-and-file workers, the polarization of all social contradictions, multiplied by the combat experience, the activity of these veterans and the underground circulation of weapons, may and do result in intensified workers protests acquiring a military core, getting more and more wild and out of control. There is, in fact, just one step left to the open armed resistance to the masters and the state. That is, in the Ukrainian enterprises, where a lot of young military retirees work, it may well run as far as shooting between the police and the workers. And it’s not that obvious whom will the military units where these workers had served side with in this situation: the today’s Gestapo’s shooting of fathers, mothers and former brothers in arms will show the current military what the bourgeoisie will do with them tomorrow, and against whom it makes them fight. This makes clear one more “rationale” for the “martial law”: under its cover, the Interior Ministry and Security Service of Ukraine receive exclusive rights and withdraw all or almost all weapons from the population, conducting at the same time an intensive search for “security risks” among the troops. In this sense, in the sense of the struggle of the bourgeoisie against the revolutionary movement of the Ukrainian working class, the “martial law” increasingly resembles the police multimove operation, in which the army is likely to be the outside perimeter guard, within which the security forces will crush every effort opposing the ruling oligarchy. At the same time, for the sake of appearance, the government can demonstrate the movement of troops, can put something on the borders and on the Sea of Azov, since formally the Ukraine, as the offended bourgeois state, is obliged to somehow respond and somehow react to the “RF aggression”. Yes, history knows cases where a trifle, such as a collision of ships or a shot from a cannon, etc., became casus belli – the reason for war. And any such “casus” in the most general sense is a bad sign for the whole of our working class. Yes, “martial law” is not introduced for a previously known period, it is absurd, since, having started military operations, you can never know for sure when they are to end. It is the police law that can be introduced for a certain period, as mentioned above. But in spite of the fact that a large-scale war has not yet begun, yet the single thread by which imperialism has suspended the peoples of the world, has become even thinner on November 26. This must be well understood. Today it is vital to understand yet another thing – the fact that the social nature of the war, its true meaning, is not at all determined by where Ukrainian, Russian or any other troops are stationed, and not by who has rammed someone first or fired the first cannon. The nature of the unfolding war is determined by the policy this war continues, and the class, and the purposes for which the war is started or waged. It is clear that only one social class is interested in pre-war provocations, in preparation and in the war itself – the world imperialist bourgeoisie, opposing all working mankind, who does not need any predatory redistribution of the world, nor the continuation of this policy by military means, i.e. a world war. At the same time it is necessary to remember the tactical point. The fact that the Ukraine has declared “martial law” does not mean an open declaration of war against Russia. However, the peculiarity of the moment is that the line between peace and war is even more blurred: they are crawling into the war and waging the fight without openly declaring it.A couple of words about the rapid mobilization law in the Ukraine.Today, there has been some movement of troops at the level of regiment and above (brigades and other operational units) in the Kherson, Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regions. On the line between Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LDPR) and the Ukraine the usual tense situation is preserved with periodic artillery shooting. Indirect signs of preparation for a major offensive are not yet noticed. There is not yet hidden mobilization observed on the Ukrainian or DPR parts. For two days, all the checkpoints on the Ukraine-DPR line were closed, but since the morning of 11/28/2018, the traffic through these checkpoints gradually resumed. Nobody knows for how long it is. Ukrainian workers’ correspondents note that there are not yet lettered (with weapons, military raw materials, ammunition, etc.) special trains to be seen on the railways of the Western Ukraine. The main warships of the Ukrainian fleet are in Odessa and Nikolaev, there are no signs of gathering in long-distance military campaigns either. The world's biggest plane is a step closer to its first flight, after passing another major milestone. Named Stratolaunch, the colossal aircraft travelled down the runway under its own power for the first time, firing all six of its Pratt and Whitney turbofan engines - each weighing 8,940lbs (4,000kg). During the aircraft's first low-speed taxi test, Stratolaunch successfully travelled down the runway at 25 knots (28mph/45km/h). Once testing has been completed, the aircraft - which has a wingspan longer than a football field - will be used to launch satellites and other objects into space. This could include a Dream Chaser spaceship, which could act as a mini-shuttle to reach low Earth orbit destinations and return astronauts or payloads to a runway within 24 hours. It is expected to take the skies for the first time in 2019. The main purpose of the test was to put the aircraft’s ability to steer and stop through its paces. A ground team from Stratolaunch Systems Corp monitored a number of systems, including steering, braking, anti-skid and telemetry. All objectives of this test were achieved. In a written statement George Bugg, aircraft program manager at Stratolaunch, said: 'This was another exciting milestone for our team and the program. 'Our crew was able to demonstrate ground directional control with nose gear steering, and our brake systems were exercised successfully on the runway. 'Our first low speed taxi test is a very important step toward first flight. We are all proud and excited.' Since the first engine runs in September, the Stratolaunch team has performed a series of engine tests from a newly established Stratolaunch Mission Control Center (MCC) located at its facility at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. The MCC serves as the Seattle-based firm's hub for testing communications and will eventually be the centre of its aircraft and launch operations. Once low-speed taxi tests have been safely completed, the company will begin the next phase of taxi testing, which will include increased speeds. The plane is the vision of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen who wants it to act as a giant air pad in the sky, allowing payloads to reach space faster and at a lower cost than existing technologies. The aircraft is so huge if it sat in the centre of a football field, it would be wide enough for its wings to reach 12.5 feet (3.8 metres) beyond each goalpost. Test flights were expected for 2016 and 2017, but project delays have pushed back the date to sometime in 2019. The Stratolaunch team completed fuel testing of all six fuel tanks on September 19, to ensure their proper operations, at the Mojave Air and Space Port. Each of the six tanks were filled independently to check their fuel mechanisms were working correctly and to that they were properly sealed. In addition to fuel testing, engineers began testing the flight control system. So far, they have have exercised the full limits of motion and rate of deflection of the wings control surfaces and stabilisers. Building up to this week’s engine tests, electrical, pneumatic, and fire detection systems were also given a once over. Writing on the Stratolaunch website, CEO Jean Floyd said: 'Engine testing was conducted with a build-up approach and consisted of three phases. 'First as a "dry motor", where we used an auxiliary power unit to charge the engine. 'Next, as a "wet motor" where we introduced fuel. 'Finally, each engine was started one at a time and allowed to idle. 'In these initial tests, each of the six engines operated as expected.' Over the next few months, they plan to continue to test the aircraft’s engines at higher power levels and varying configurations, culminating in the start of taxi tests on the runway. Paul Allen unveiled the world's largest aircraft at the start of June. The massive plane rolled out by Allen's aerospace firm, Stratolaunch Systems, features the longest wingspan of any aircraft ever built, according to Popular Mechanics. With a wingspan of 385 feet, the six-engine plane will be larger than Howard Hughes' 1947 H-4 Hercules, known as the 'Spruce Goose,' and the Antonov An-225, a Soviet-era cargo plane originally built to transport the Buran space shuttle that is currently the world's largest aircraft. The Stratolaunch is an aircraft that is designed to carry rockets between its two fuselages. In 2011, the project's cost was initially estimated to be at $300million, though there is no word as to the updated figures. After the plane reaches altitude, it would then drop the launch vehicle, which will subsequently fire its boosters and launch into space from the air. Images of the mammoth plane, nicknamed the 'Roc,' were released. It shows the plane emerging from its hangar in California's Mojave Desert. The plane was built by Scaled Composites, an aerospace company founded by Allen's partner in the Stratolaunch project, Burt Rutan. Scaled is owned by defense contractor Northrop Grumman. The Stratolaunch weighs approximately 500,000 pounds without any cargo. It is designed to carry a maximum takeoff weight of 1.3million pounds, according to The Verge. The plane rolls around with the aid of 28 wheels. Once airborne, it is powered by six 747 aircraft engines. The size of the plane will enable it to serve as an airborne rocket launcher. Traditionally, satellites and other aircraft have been launched into space from a launchpad. This requires a tremendous amount of fuel. The Stratolaunch, on the other hand, will enable rockets to have a 'head start' since they will be carried into the sky before they launch into space. Last year, Stratolaunch signed a deal with aerospace and defense firm Orbital ATK. Under terms of the deal, the Stratolaunch will propel Orbital's Pegasus XL rocket, which is used to send small satellites into space. Allen's move coincides with a surge of new businesses planning to sell internet access, Earth imagery, climate data and other services from networks of hundreds of satellites in low-altitude orbits around Earth. But his vision is different from what Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic and other companies have for building commercial highways to space. Musk's goal is to fly people to Mars. Bezos is developing low-cost, reusable rockets with the goal of moving energy-intensive, heavy industry off Earth. Branson is focused on space tourism and a small satellite launcher. The advantage of Allen's approach will be the ability to position the plane so satellites can be directly delivered into very precise orbits and do so quickly, without launch range scheduling issues and weather-related delays, Chuck Beames, who oversees Allen's space ventures, said. The Stratolaunch plane looks nothing like its behemoth predecessor aircraft. Rather than transporting heavy cargo inside a main body section, Stratolaunch is a twin-fuselage craft that incorporates engines, landing gear, avionics and other parts from a pair of Boeing 747 jets coupled with a frame, wings and skin handmade of lightweight composites. Designed and built by Northrop Grumman Corp's Scaled Composites, the plane is similar in form and function to Scaled's aircraft built to ferry spaceships into the air and release them for independent rocket rides beyond the atmosphere, a service Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic intends to offer to paying passengers. Stratolaunch plans a similar service for satellites, particularly the low-Earth orbiting multi-hundred member constellations under development by companies including SpaceX and Google's Terra Bella to provide internet access, Earth imagery and other data. The F-35 completed development nearly 4 years ago, and the planned Block 4 programs have disintegrated in the breakup of the US, as the F-35 JPO fell into pieces. ITC, Inc, with the support of the USA, PSA, Italy, and Alaska, has been selected to take over from the JPO as a impartial party to oversee Lockheed and subcontractors in planning and developing the Block 4 upgrade package. Under the scheme, four different increments will be developed:
Block 4, Increment 1 (4.1) - Evolving Capability
Block 4.1 is designed to bring the aircraft to its full potential, without making substantial changes to the F-35's systems, building directly on the Block 3F that all current F-35s are running. Key features include
6x AMRAAM carriage, using a twin rail in place of the 2000lb bomb on A/C variants
Block 4.1 is designed to allow existing F-35s to be upgraded to modern standards without major expenditure in hardware modifications, and largely consists of a weapons integration program with some software components. Block 4.1 is scheduled for fleet release in 2023. Cost per aircraft is estimated at $9 million.
Block 4, Increment 2 (4.2) - New Horizons
Evolving on Block 4 Increment 1 systems integration work, F-35 Block 4.2 aims to begin leveraging systems designed and developed for the F-22B program, replacing several key F-35 sensor systems with evolved ones. Key features include:
AN/APG-81v2 GaN MIMO radar, based on the AN/APG-89, with . Notable differences from the AN/APG-89 include a reduced number of elements (3,900 from 4,800), and increased focus on electronic warfare. The AN/APG-81v2 also expands upon the Block 4.1 multistatic mode, leveraging MIMO technology to further increase the size of the virtual aperture, and offering a 16x maximum power output improvement over the baseline AN/APG-81 (though this ability is virtually unused).
EOTS-XR. The F-35's EOTS will be upgraded with technology developed in part for the F-22B and the Sniper ATP-SE, as well as further development since the latter, to provide several important features. Notable additions include 4k thermal imaging, with two new spectra, a 4k visible light camera (with a new generation of coating technology to facilitate its use while maintaining stealth), and a 4k near UV camera. The new EOTS-XR will also include a novel synthetic aperture optics system, multiplying usable resolution (especially when obscured by obstacles) dramatically.
EO/DASv1. Despite the name, EO/DASv1 is the exact same line replaceable unit that used on the F-22B, with some upgrades that will be pushed to the F-22B fleet, including a further improvement of sensor resolution to 4k and the expansion of dynamic range and binning by about 20%. EO/DASv1 will also include a pixel-matched set of visible light cameras, to support new HMDS functionality.
MADL-L, augmenting the current phased array datalink system with a laser link system. MADL-L will also provide Link 16 support, as a survey of customer aircraft indicates that F-35 rollout is not proceeding as quickly as originally thought. MADL-L will also provide capability for satellite datalink, though no satellites currently exist to leverage this functionality.
HMDSv2. The F-22B program reduced the weight and increased the capability of the HMDS, upgrades that will be pushed back onto the F-35. The HMDSv2 program will add full-color support to the system, reduce weight further to no greater than a non-HMD helmet, and will provide a new off-axis capability, producing a synthetic viewport for the pilot beyond their head's actual rotation, based on the EO/DASv1 data.
Next-Gen RAM, leveraging carbon nanotubes and F-22B upgrades to further decrease RCS and thermal signature, while increasing durability.
Block 4.2 is timelined for 2026, to allow lessons learned from the closely related F-22B systems to be applied into F-35s in Block 4.2 configuration, with a cost per aircraft of $31 million.
Block 4 Increment 3 (4.3) - ADVENT Resurgent
New engine technology provides the potential to increase range and decrease thermal profiles for the F-35, most importantly the variable bypass ADVENT system. F-35 Block 4.3 will bring a new engine and related support systems to the F-35.
Pratt & Whitney F135-200 ADVENT. The F135-200 leverages the engine core experience gained in the F119-200 and adds the new variable bypass ADVENT system on top of. ADVENT allows the F135-200 to be more than 25% more fuel efficient in cruise, providing a 35% range improvement, while simultaneously producing 15% more thrust than the F135 baseline does, achieved in part by using the first entirely 3d printed fan disk. The F135-200 is also designed to enable new capability, such as providing a 2MW power generator in A and C variants, as well as providing high volume mix air for the new generation nozzle.
Air Mix Vectoring Nozzle (AMVN). The AMVN is designed to accomplish two objectives:
Reduce IR signature of engine exhaust, by mixing hot exhaust with bypass air in a carefully designed manner, reducing the temperature of the core exhaust plume and speeding up plume dissipation speed, decreasing detectability using IR systems.
Provide limited thrust vectoring, using fluidic thrust vectoring technology. By injecting air in carefully chosen ways into the exhaust stream, the body of the exhaust can be redirected, achieving thrust vectoring with a fixed nozzle.
(B only) LiftSystem improvements, mostly related to the increased thrust provided by the F135-200, allowing the F-35B to carry its original 2000lb per bay internal payload.
F-35 Block 4.3 is independent of Block 4.2, though dependent on Block 4.1, and is expected to cost $15 million per A/C, and $21 million per B. Block 4.3 is planned for availability by 2025.
Block 4 Increment 4 (4.4) - The Light of Freedom
An emerging key technology is airborne laser systems, led by General Atomics in the PSA. Leveraging GA laser development for the F-35, Block 4 Increment 4 will introduce two different laser packages (one for A/C and one for A/B/C), based on changes to the F135-200 system in Block 4 Increment 2. The key to Block 4.4 is the scalable laser architecture (SLA), developed by General Atomics, and consisting of multiple composable laser modules, allowing SLA lasers to be easily, rapidly, and cheaply modified to support different missions, and allowing them to provide several common configurations. All three lasers are built on the SLA, with different size and position constraints.
Full Power Laser (FPL): Using the F135 developed for the F-35B and the space that would normally be filled with a fuel tank on the A/C and a lift fan on the F-35B, the FPL provides the F-35 with a 1MW solid state laser, taking 5MW off the F135 shaft. The FPL has two discrete emitters on the ventral and dorsal surfaces, enabling full coverage of the F-35's surroundings. However, the FPL cannot be added to F-35Bs, as it replaces the lift fan, and removes approximately 150nmi of range from F-35A/C, due to the removal of the fuel tank.
Modular Lightweight Laser (MLL). The MLL is designed to leverage the reduced capability power generation provided by the F135, providing a smaller, less impactful laser that provides similar capability to the FPL. The MLL provides a 250kW laser system, installed in the gun space and with emitters on both ventral and dorsal surfaces, that does not impact range or payload as much as the FLL does, and can be used on the F-35B.
Both the FPL and MLL have three major modes of operation:
Anti-anti-aircraft missile: The laser can be used in combination with EO/DASv2 to actively engage and hard kill incoming missiles, as well as attempting to spoof their seeker systems if IR guided (though shining a 1MW laser into most cameras will not simply spoof the camera).
Antiballistic missile: Based on experience gained with the ABL, but ported onto a platform that is vastly more survivable in hostile airspace, the FPL provides full (50nm) and MLL limited (10nm) boost-phase antiballistic missile interception capability. ABM mode operation includes the use of a spotter beam to clear the intermediate airspace, as well as the use of the radar instead of IRST to provide engagement data.
Antiaircraft: The lasers will be used in combination with new software as a dogfighting weapon, aiming to physically attack hostile aircraft.
Block 4 Increment 4 capability is dependent on both Block 4 Increment 2 and Block 4 Increment 3 systems, and is planned to reach operational status in 2028. Block 4.4 upgrade is expected to cost $20 million for FPL and $15 million for MLL (not including 4.2 and 4.3 costs).
In summary, the costs of upgrading a single F-35 from Block 3F to a particular increment would be (noting that 4.2 subsumes 4.1)

Development costs for the upgrade program are distributed based on current F-35 orders and fleet size to all four F-35 Block 4 partners. Additionally, as Italy is largely responsible for maintaining European F-35 customers, non-Italian European F-35s will count for half an F-35 in their cost allocation, while overall development costs are estimated at $23 billion.
